WiMax vs UTV

    Hey guys...I've had a few calls from the WiMax sales rep and today their engineers were in my area and dropped a leaflet in the door. Anyway, They're offering 4th generation technology and a WiMax home hub for 30 quid cheaper than UTV. But what exactly is 4th generation technology? Is the Motorola hub the wireless router?? How does their service measure up to what I'm all ready receiving from UTV or any other ISP for that matter using a line? By the way, I subscribe to the UTV 7mb wireless package. This WiMax thing is a bit confusing :confused:

    If UTV are giving you good speeds and reliability, then don't change. Imagine Wimax is a mobile Internet access network, like 3g mobile networks. Don't believe the hype, as it's mostly a marketing blurb, and mobile Wimax will not be as good as DSL, cable or proper wireless.

    Thanx for the response. So if it's just a better version of a USB dongle I'll stay where I am ;)

    In essence your saying that a service like wireless Metro from www.digiweb.ie
    would be much better than Wimax?

    I'm saying I'd rather stick with broadband as opposed to downgrading to midband.

    Dont go WiMAX!

    I used to support WiMAX at Tier 2 level for a certain ISP who will not be named, the technology is not reliable and is really for those who are stuck for broadband, if your current ISP is ok then stay, if your thinking on a change go for a wired medium from UPC, Eircom or Magnet.

    Thanx Penrose. Yeah I was thinking that was the case alright. I'm grand for broadband...near the exchange etc. so UTV it is then :)
