Handbrake at lights

    Hi everyone!

So coming to a full stop at lights - whats the "correct" sequence of events? I think I brake, clutch, handbrake (off foot brake), neutral?
Or are you supposed to go into neutral and then handbrake?

Also - my instructor told me that coming to lights you are better off not going down in gears but stopping in whatever gear you're in?

    Any insight anyone?!

I do the same: brake, clutch and brake together, handbrake, neutral (if I'm in first 3 cars, I stay in 1st, if not, I go to neutral. If I know I'll be waiting awhile, I'll go to neutral too)

Come down through your gears, unless you do not have time to do this. You can stop in any gear.

There is a benefit of down shifting coming to traffic lights. If you're coming to a red light and drop to second gear and slowly roll towards the junction there's a chance the lights will go green before you get there so that you can keep on driving and not have stop and start again.

My instructor explained it to me by telling me that when you're in the car the idea is to drive, not to stop and start. He's an odd guy (in that he phrases things funny) but an amazing instructor.

I always do this, and did so in my test and got no marks for gears or progress or hazards. Maybe give it a try next time you're out and see how you find it.
