    Hey all,
I'm looking to get an efficient diesel car for work.
I have a budget of about €2000 and was hoping to get something that does 50+mpg.
I have been trying to research this myself but there doesn't seem to be a large source of data on one site but just varying pieces of info on numerous sites.

So what I'm trying to find out is what cars fit my criteria...
Starting off...I assume any 1.9 tdi engines on vw/seat/audi wiill meet the 50 mpg requirement?

    Cheers
    T

50+ when cruising on the motorway maybe - you wont see that around town.

www.parkers.co.uk has a facts and figures section that will give you combined mpg figure - most modern(post 2000) diesel hatchbacks will achieve 50 combined.

You might have trouble getting one within your budget though - especially since now everyone wants a diesel

Any of the small diesels 1.4 206 or yaris might get close in mixed driving. Not start/stop I'd think.

There is a PaddyWagon thread about here and there are some cheap VAG cars there.

Very easy to keep them in 50mpg. I hit 63 a while ago with a mainly eco run and consistently got 57 last Summer before I started driving on motorways when I got my license. In the last 10,000 miles of driving Ive only dropped below 50 mpg twice when I heavy loads for a week at a time.

So regional and N roads should get you the best results.

For that price Im of the opinion that the VAG diesel is the best. Its what my own research concluded last year and its why I have the car I have now.

    Best o luck.

Parkers.co.uk was mentioned here and the MPG ratings seem to be quite accurate.

on your budget it,ll be hard to get a decent diesel, is it a car you need? if not you should look into a small van, cheap to buy and cheap to run and ya should find them within your budget

You can have that mpg, or that budget, but not both.

Only exception I know of is a Citroen Saxo 1.5 diesel. Easily averages 65mpg, and is low-tech, so no modern diesel technology hassles, either.

    e.g., this one: in Tyrone

A C3 is a newer model, but not in your budget range it seems: C3 Diesl

If you're looking for cheap, reliable, economic, and VW, then you're looking at old Jetta's, tbh. Yep, the OLD one, not the current one(s).........and they're out there.

You don't want to acknowledge that as truth because, deep down in places you don't talk about at the Green Party, you want me on that road, you need me on that road. We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

I got both and there are a few links in the thread I mentioned that meet that.

Rover 75 will do 50mpg on a run, so too the L series equipped cars ie Rover 400, Rover 600, Rover 45, Rover 25 (if you can find one) also the 406 HDi and Citroen C5 will too and the VAGs. You're spoilt for choice really :D

A VAG for €2000 will be as rough as a bears arse compared to a Rover or French diesel as the VAGs are expensive in comparison due to popularity.

Well, maybe you could if you sacrificed reliability. Which, of course, might quickly negate the benefits of 50mpg.:)

A small bit of hypermiling and you'd get that in your sleep in a diesel

I get 56 mpg in my 1.4 petrol corolla. Easily 550 miles out of a 10 gallon tank

It really helps if the car has a real time (or as close as possible) mpg indicator, it'll teach you what is good and bad driving practice when it comes to fuel.

Oh and my car cost 1500 euro

Lads if ye can't find a reliable diesel for €2000 that does 50mpg ye should be shot. Shot might be an over reaction, lol.

50mpg where though? On a run sure, but otherwise I think 50mpg & reliable for €2k might be a tall order. Feel free to prove me wrong, though!

I mean on a run. I'm sure the OP does too.

Well with the VAG's you can have a dodgy temp sensor. So thats 15 quid to fix and that can affect the MPG. Aside from that the hasnt broken aside from a weird oil seal and general maintenance.

If you look well its not as tall an order as you may think.

By on a run do you all mean one journey or would the average across a whole take be more meaningful?
