Looking for a large (18") and quiet laptop

Mostly for college, but not to bring to college. I'm not sure which brand to go for. Currently I have an 12 inch Acer Aspire (with Windows Vista) that isn't good for my eyes but most annoyingly is never silent, even when idle. Before that I had a great Acer Ferrari until it got stolen, so I have mixed views on Acer.

All I really need it for is internet, word processing, music, and videos, though I tend to have a lot of tabs running at once, so something decent.

So for about 500 or 600 euro what should I be looking at? Am I better off buying online at somewhere like laptopsdirect.co.uk, or buying it in Dublin where I might get better customer service if something goes wrong?

    Any advice really appreciated!

    Cheers

Thats a common misunderstanding. Having several tabs is not resource intensive. Its designed not to be. You'd actually be better looking at lower spec machines if you want the fans to spin down. A ULV Dual Core will be cheap and should run cool.

Aldi have laptops,17inch, dual core,3gig ram, 350gig drive,599euro medion 3year gaurantee.I ,VE NO idea of their
quiteness ,but on any pc shut down services you don,t need, drive indexing, bluetooth etc reduce resolution to 1024x768, that reduces power use,cpu use= less heat= quieter fans.
on my pc i have at least ten services, stopped, drive indexing off.
my laptop is thinkpad t42 , almost completely silent, cpu is pentium 1.4 ghz,p4 single core centrino.
google quiet laptop reviews .Dont install itunes, acrobat reader, they are constantly updating, which uses power .pcs with solid state drives use less power, but they are more expensive than a standard drive.i see no great saving in buying online ,at least you can go back to a shop,if theres a problem.i cant remember ever seeing a 18inch laptop ,its mostly 15inch or 17 inch screens.

    Thanks for the responses everyone.

I forgot to mention that I also use Skype and MSN, and occasionally uTorrent. I only recently got iTunes cos someone gave me a 25 euro voucher but never been a fan of it, prefer lightweight programmes like Winamp, and try not to allow anything to auto update.

Ricman, yeah I've seen 18.6 inch laptops from Acer, but they're closer to 800.

X in the City, how much do you reckon I will need to spend and where would you recommend to shop?

is internet, word processing, music, and videos,

Not really going to be an issue is it? Gotta think from the OPs POV not your own, not everyone is a "poweruser".

600e is still too much considering my flat mate got a second hand acer with a 14" led screen with 3 gigs of ram, 250gig hdd and a c2d processor for 300 squids from pc world
