    Hi,

I was wondering if anyone had done the Paris marathon - I want to do it however I am slightly put off by having to get a doctors cert which means I would have incur the cost of a doctors visit (about 60 euro) if there is a way around this or a cheaper alternative to my over priced doctor then please let me know.

    Thanks

If your running a marathon its no harm at all in going to the doc anyway. I know i'd go once a year anyway.

If its your first time, it would be good just to go and have a quick check up, otherwise its just a case of asking and receiving if you know the doctor well. I think mine charged a half visit for a quick chat which was mostly "what do you want me to write on this thing" :D

Be sure to print of the specific cert from the Paris marathon site, a normal doctors cert will not be accepted.

I did Paris last year and yup i'm afraid you need the cert alright (the paris marathonn cert from the website as mentioned above). Like the others have said theres no harm in going to the doctor for a quick check up at some point between now and April 2011 anyway (7 months away), especially if it's a firt marathon your doing. You might get lucky and just ask them to stamp the form and if its your family/regular doctor they might just do it for you

    Good luck:pac:

To be honest, I just printed out the letter based on the sample shown on the website and asked the doctor to sign it for me.

If it's your regular doctor, they shouldn't charge for it (but that's a whole other issue).

That said, I had been to see them a month or two due to various ailments including exercise induced asthma so they knew my medical history and that I'd been active in sport a lot. If the doctor doesn't know you, I can completely understand why they wouldn't sign it.

Thanks for all your replies. Looks like I'll just grin and bear the cost

@Iron Enthusiast - any recommendations for accomodation in Paris?

Another Tip. The luggage drop of is on avenue Foch. Get out at a station convenient to this if you intend dropping off luggage. Champs Elysses/Etoile is a 50 minute round trip to teh baggage drop including crossing the Etoile (roundabout around the Arc) against traffic (not convenient)! If you need to queue up for the loo (bring toilet paper) add another 20. Definately research this.

It is likely you'll have to visit your GP within the next 7 months for whatever reason. So just bring cert mentionned above and get it signed then.
You can give the cert the day you pick up your race number in Paris

I thought there was something in the Rotterdam race rules about needing a doctors cert as well, but I never got one and was never asked for one.

But I could be remembering wrong.

In France you require a doctors cert for all races. If you're a member of a French club you'll get an annual one but for visitors you need to go to the docs.

That's a bit rubbish and nanny state'ish. Whatever happened to people taking responsibility for their own actions?

No French races for me then, not that I was planning to or anything of course.

Do they have a nhs type system in France where you don't pay a direct fee to see the doc? If they do, then the certification route might result in lower insurance costs which could be passed on as lower race entry fees, so there might be a benefit.

You don't need a cert or anything in the UK though and they manage to have much lower entry fees than Ireland.
