    Hi guys,

Can anyone give me a step by step walk through on how to set the phone up from scratch as if its just out of the box? I'd like to see if my 2g would work properly for a brand new configured phone. I would then like to jailbreak it etc afterwards - i have my shsh thingys with cydia. If i connect it to itunes do i do a factory restore? And will it then automatically update me to 4.0.2 - how can i downgrade this?

    Thks in advance

    Yep, factory restore from iTunes.

The 2G won't take OS 4, iTunes will restore iOS to version 3.1.3

You probably be able to restore a 2G to "out-of-the-box" i.e. reinstall the original OS revision, unless you can get your hands on a copy of the original iOS - Apple won't supply it.

Hi Seamus sorry my post was a bit misleading - i have an iphone 4 - when i say the 2g i mean trying to get the 2g to work properly on 3's network with an iphone 4. I said id give the whole thing a factory restore and see how it looks then but im not sure of what happens when you hook up to itunes etc and how to downgrade so i can use my shsh's on file with cydia

Well same deal really. Many sites provide previous iOS versions for download, as well as guides on how to install them., if you google for it.

It's still all done through iTunes.

Can anyone tell me what i need to do. Do i need to download tinyumbrealla or does that matter as my device says i have my shsh 4.01 4.02 on file with cydia. Is it a case of just plug in the phone to itunes, let it do a full restore? I guess the phone will then have 4.0.2 as the system. what do i need to do to get it back to 4.01 - can i just point the browser to jailbreakme? Thks guys

Actually, you need to do a bit more trickery:

    http://lifehacker.com/5572003/how-to-downgrade-your-iphone-3g%5Bs%5D-from-ios-4-to-ios-313

That's for a downgrade to 3.1.3, but it's exactly the same process once you have your hands on the 4.0.1 (or 4.0) firmware.
