Target shooters Laura and Paula Cunningham represented Ireland at the Lord Roberts centre in London last week.

Kells sisters Paula and Laura Cunningham, representing the Wilkinstown Target Shooting Club, displayed impressive form in the GB 18th Junior International competition at the Lord Robert's Centre in Bisley, London.

Paula Cunningham, who is a student at Dundalk IT, competed in the International Grand Prix and maintained a high enough level of consistent shooting to claim a silver medal in a nail-biting event. She proudly took her place on the podium and watched as the Irish flag was raised in her honour.

Laura Cunningham also achieved a personal best score in the tournament and qualified for the international final in fifth place, beating off stiff competition from both Germany and South Africa. She held onto her place in the final which was won by Britain's Sheree Cox.

The Cunningham sisters are among three Irish shooters who qualified to compete in the international tournament along with Sean Rogers, who achieved a personal best score in the junior men's 60x10m event. The Irish team were welcomed home by the chairperson of the National Target Shooting Association Liam Crawford, coach Geoffrey Cooney and international coach Matt Fox.

    Well done all! :)

Well done Wilkinstown! A great performance.

It's a pity we couldn't get them to the Youth Olympic Games in Singapore.

Wow, They should be the faces of Irish shooting.

Better looking than Des Crofton any day!

As I recall they've already done a Ladies in Sport calendar with a photo from a previous Bisley Junior International. Sparks will recall the details I'm sure. That may have been Laura and Susan though (Three sisters, all good, solid air rifle shooters)

How come anytime RTE want a shooter interviewed they get fat old men!

Never young people well dressed and well spoken, or young ladies.
Always some old codger with a comb over or a beer gut
(I'm referencing the previous 6 interviews I have seen about shooting/hunting on RTE).

Do these Ladies have any interest in hunting?

Could they be persuaded to be the new interviewee's for all RTE hunting shooting reports ;)

I don't know, but they're target shooters. It wouldn't be appropriate for them to commentate on hunting related issues without the expertise required. Besides which, while it's nice to be represented by a pretty face, it's not the face that wins medals.

    Maybe so.
But if a pretty face wins medals they will get on the news, Ref Derval O'Rourke and the 17year old swimmer!

Hundreds of men have gone before, but Derval will always be questioned on Running

Leave them be with the shooting - anything else means politics which will take the enjoyment out of it

they're obviously enjoying themselves and doing well

just applaud them and leave them to it

    B'Man

I think that's about the most sensible thing to be said here. Let's not try drag them out of a sporting arena and into a political one or a public representative one.

Don't have the girls' scores yet IWM, but Sean's was 542 (15 10s) which was his new PB. 560-581 made the finals. (Sean's our first disabled air rifle shooter btw. The first in Ireland, I think - and by that I mean the first registered as such, we've one well-known shooter who is disabled but who doesn't register to shoot as such).

Susan and Paula in 2007. From the NTSA website:
    Women in Sport Calendar 2007
Every year, Women in Sport produces a calendar. This year, they held a competition for those who wanted to be in it:

From the Women in Sport website:
    Inspirational Moments, Photo Competition
How would you like your photo and written article featured in next year's 2007 Women in Sport Calendar?

We are inviting you to submit a "Women in Sport" photograph that inspires you and an explanation of your reasons why, in less than 150 words. We will be selecting and featuring the 12 most inspiring photos and article to feature in next year's calendar.

It could be a photo from the www.womeninsport.ie website or one that you have taken yourself of a particular activity. The closing date for entries is 31st October 2006.

    So naturally we entered.
    We got this today:
I would like to congratulate you as the photo and written piece you sent in to the Women in Sport Calendar Competition was selected to appear in the 2007 Women in Sport Calendar, which will be printed in the coming weeks.

So yay us! Here's the winning photo. Not too bad I think.

Title: Sisters doing it for themselves...

Description: Paula and Susan Cunningham shooting during the British Air Rifle Championships in 2006. Susan is the current Irish National Champion in Olympic Air Rifle and Paula is chomping at her heels, with Paula holding the Bronze medal from the National Championships.

Why it's inspiring: The Cunninghams are not just good junior shooters or just good lady shooters; they are the best shooters in Ireland, without qualification. Susan is both the Senior and the Junior Irish National Champion in Olympic Air Rifle. The girls are an inspiration to the entire sport, senior and junior alike, and their success has prompted widespread fundamental change in how the sport is organised in this country. Their dedication to training has set new standards for the sport in Ireland. Their prowess in the sport is without precedent, and they have gone further than any Irish shooter before them. In 2006 they represented Ireland in the World Championships, while Susan was studying to take ten honours in her Junior Cert. They are currently our best hopes for the Olympic Games in both Bejing in 2008 and London in 2012, and represent the very best our sport has to offer.

    They don't:

    Not every time at least.
But usually, RTE wants to interview someone about firearms legislation or gun crime, and that's not what shooters do, so RTE interviews the blazer set instead.

Congrats to the Cunninghams and everyone else who travelled over.
It really has been a great fortnight for all the Irish shooters!:D

I was shooting on range one day in 2007 and Ray was there shooting 6mmBR if I remember.

I was just testing my new Burris tactical mounts at the time.
He's a nice fella, I was chatting him briefly that day, him and 2 others were shooting that day

There's some CISM stuff coming up for the next few months, matches in Brazil and Switzerland, so they'll probably be training with the 6BRs again over the next while.
