Updating iPhone & iPad software

I'm having a reoccurring problem with iTunes and updating/restoring an iPhone and an iPad. I've had the same problem with both a Windows Vista machine and a MacBook so the problem may lie with my Netgear Router (WGR614v7).*
Here's what happens on both computers; I connect iPhone/iPad to computer, iTunes loads and prompts that a new software update is available so it goes ahead and downloads, about halfway through the download the connection timesout, I retry it a few times with the same result, eventually it downloads and the update process starts. At the point of updating a message appears saying the iPhone/iPad cannot be updated and then the device is in recovery mode. I then try to restore the device and at the point "restoring iPhone/iPad" a message appears saying the device cannot be restored and gives an error code. *I check the code on the Apple support site and it suggests different options (latest iTunes, change USB port, different computer etc...), I do all this and I have the same problem. *I had to bring my iPhone to the mother-in-laws to restore and it was fine. The fact that the same problem is on both machines leads me to believe that the problem is with the router. *I've also uninstalled/reinstalled iTunes on both computers.
Has anyone else ever come across this problem? I've Googled it and can't seem to find anything.
Apologies for the long post :)

Stephen if you try and just back up a device to itunes do you get any errors during that?

I've no problem syncing any of the devices to iTunes. They back up perfect and even restore from back up works fine.

@phill106 - I was thinking the download was getting corrupted as it downloaded, could a setting in the router do that?

Not unless it was set to disconnect very often. The ipsw files are approx 300 meg or so. Should have it downloaded in say... 10 minutes? If your router is losing dsl connection within that time limit all the time, something is wrong there alright.
Reboot router, check connection works and download it again. If download stops again, try to download some other large file from elsewhere, see if it cuts out. If it doesnt, just google iphone/ipad firmware, lots of other sites host them.

When I uninstalled iTunes and downloaded it again I had an "Unknown Publisher" error with the download, and iTunes wouldn't install. I had a look online about the error and found a suggestion to disable the SPI Firewall in the router settings, I did this and that problem was resolved. I have since tried enabling/disabling SPI Firewall incase this caused a problem with my issue but hasn't had any affect. I have also reset the router. I'm on UPC broadband 5MB so the software download takes about 10-15 mins. I'll try your suggestion of downloading another large file and also the ipsw from a different website.
I'm doing to restore the iPad later in the mother-in-laws, but I'd like to get to the bottom of this issue so I can update my devices without the worry of them going into recovery mode.
