Just wondering are you allowed to set up a wireless network on campus. I won't be using it to share internet with anybody else it is just I have a fair few things that I would want to connect to the internet: laptop ipod touch Xbox etc. I would make sure to secure it so people can't get free internet so campus can't complain about losing there 100 or 150 or whatever they charge for internet. On a related note what is the story with Xbox live and online games on campus?

You will quickly learn that campus residents are not a crowd you want to mess with.

By all means set up a wireless network, but if your cought you may be put out of your house.
I think their policy is that you use their old crap wired connection or nothing else.
The wire itself (depending on your luck) may not even reach the table or yor bed.

I'd say if you want to take the risk of being put off campus (which they love because they keep your money and can give the room to someone else) just for your x-box games then go for it.

If you connect the wire into the x-box will it work?
Am not into that gaming carry on.
But it looks like by campus rules anyway, you can only have the wire suck into whatever you want.

I'd reccomend you e-mail them to get their proper resonse. But I feel am correct in what I say.

I got a super long cable personally, and it reached everywhere.
I heard they are very strict about wireless, and they will check.

Just so you know, the campus residence internet is really good. MUCH faster than you could possibly have at home, fast downloads, and great for gaming.

If you need to connect more than one thing to the internet maybe you can use a router to create a local network, but with wireless turned off?... is that possible?

I'm pretty sure online games are fine. I saw a few peoples xbox's on the network every so often so I'm assuming its working. Its the same networks the rest of the college and Gamessoc use that for online gaming all the time.

Res dont like wireless networks being set up for some reason, what you can do tho is most wireless routers have an antenna you can remove which removes the wireless bit but you can still attach 3/4 devices (laptop, xbox/ps3 etc) to the network and it's more or less kosher

No routers, certainly not wireless. This is in the agreement you sign when you sign up for campus internet.

If you really need multiple devices, they won't hunt you down if you use a cheap switch. They won't appreciate you providing internet to your apartment though.

E-mail ISS once you get your room, your Internet connection sorted, and confirm your port serial code. Asking them to unblock the ports for Live and they should eventually do it at some point over the next two weeks.

I'm assuming the no wireless thing is to prevent a group of people sharing a connection and hence DCU wouldn't make as much money - anyone could set up a wireless connection for say 5 people and split the cost between them all...

I see DCU trying to make a bomb on internet being the reason for this seeing as pretty much everyone is going to want internet....

dunno about the rules but it's a bit of profiteering on DCU's behalf

I don't think all that many people pay for the internet.
I used to see plenty in the cafe at the gym, or in the hub just using the wifi. If your not a heavy internet user and are out a lot you could survive easily without it.

I am sure there is an aspect of a protectionism when it comes to wireless acess points on campus.

However it is also to do with DCU's plan for the use of the 2.4Ghz wifi spectrum. If DCU allowed the use of wireless access points it could adversely affect wireless access to DCU's own network. (I believe a couple of years ago a rouge access point caused issues with Laplan.)

You could always try a wifi card with a directional antenna which may be able to detect Laplan from the campus residence.

As said above though you have plenty of options on campus to access the internet.

Campus internet is 90 euro for the 9 months you're there iirc.
Which is a tenner a month for a connection which got

    on speedtest.
Don't be so stingy and pay it, you're getting a very very good connection for what you're paying

Especially now that the connection is open, dcu i believe are now running it like an ISP to the best of my knowledge..

if you are caught with a wireless network you will most likely be fined and have your connection revoked without refund..

One final thing to remember.. If i was in CSD i would not need to be in range of your network to know its there, i would see your router on the network..

Also, I could be wrong, but read your lease with campus res.

I remember reading a clause somewhere that if you run a wireless network on campus, you're not just fined by ISS and lose your connection, but res can fine you and have grounds to cancel your lease too.

I may be wrong in saying this, and the terms may vary from year to year.

They don't. If you're thrown out, you get the remaining rent back. You won't get it back if you leave.

A wireless connection won't work btw. Plus, you'll need to get ports opened to use Xbox Live, something which they won't always be happy to do.

Ports are all open and good to go by default now.. If you do anything you shouldnt be doing you will get a nasty letter but outside of that..

What is the general view on Torrenting, legal, of course?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 190 ✭✭Landa2

As most newer games use torrents to update, blizzard and THQ being the two developers that come to mind immediately but i know there are more.. Legal torrenting shouldnt be an issue and might in fact be the reason that the network has been opened..

CSD have a T&C entry about running a wireless network on their network yes..

Yup, I was thinking of Starcraft 2 and (hopefully soon) Diabolo 3. But then again, there might be regular meets to play those games with others. Harder to sort out now that Blizzard don't allow LAN games, of course.

My apologies, I was imagining it, had a look at the T&Cs of my apartment from last year and couldn't see it.

torrenting (of all kinds) never used to work but then one day it magically did...and we all rejoiced. Just hope it stays that way.

you can't game on the wireless but you can all over college plugged in by cable. I was able to get WoW running in the library that way.
