For me music helps with the healing process. That includes having some songs on repeat for days!
Some songs I can listen to them and they make me cry thinking of the person I loved. Other times the same song will make me smile while thinking of them.

Songs don't have to be sad ones, even some happy songs can make us sad as they were the favourite song of the person you lost or reminds you of a special time/place with them.

These are a few songs that have helped me grieve at various times. If anyone wants to post up lyrics that have helped them grieve or even lyrics that have helped emerge from the sadness and be happy(if that's the right word to use) again.

    Josh Groban-To Where You Are
Who can say for certain maybe you're still here
I feel you all around me your memory so clear

Deep in the stillness I can hear you speak
You're still an inspiration, can it be that you are my forever love
And you are watching over me from up above

Fly me up to where you are beyond the distant star
I wish upon tonight to see you smile
If only for awhile to know you're there
A breath aways not far to where you are

Are you gently sleeping here inside my dream
And isn't faith believing all power can't be seen

As my heart holds you just one beat away
I cherish all you gave me everyday
'Cause you are my forever love
    Watching me from up above
And I believe that angels breathe
And that love will live on and never leave

Fly me up to where you are beyond the distant star
I wish upon tonight to see you smile
If only for awhile to know you're there
A breath aways not far to where you are

    I know you're there
    A breath aways not far
    To where you are

    Rascal Flatts-Here Comes Goodbye
I can hear the truck tires coming up the gravel road
And its not like her to drive that slow, nothings on the radio
Footsteps on the front porch, I hear my doorbell
She usually comes right in, now I can tell

Here comes goodbye, here comes the last time
Here comes the start of every sleepless night
The first of every tear I'm gonna cry
    Here comes the pain,
Here comes me wishing things had never changed
That she was right here in my arms tonight,
    But here comes goodbye

I can hear her say I love you like it was yesterday
And I can see it written on her face that she had never felt this way
One day I thought I'd see her with her daddy by her side
And violins would play here comes the bride

But here comes goodbye, here comes the last time
Here comes the start of every sleepless night
The first of every tear I'm gonna cry
    Here comes the pain,
Here comes me wishing things had never changed
That she was right here in my arms tonight,
    But here comes goodbye

Why does it have to go from good to gone?
Before the lights turn on, yeah and you're left alone
Oh, all alone, but here comes goodbye

    Oh-oh-oh-oh

Here comes goodbye, here comes the last time
Here comes the start of every sleepless night
The first of every tear I'm gonna cry
Here comes the pain, Here comes me wishing things had never changed
That she was right here in my arms tonight,
    But here comes goodbye

    Elisa-One Step Away
One step away from all I want and I know it's all here

Afraid to move, afraid to choose, afraid of my own fear

Of times when I may not be strong
Places where I may not belong

But I hold on to this feeling
    That stands above all feelings
Tellin' me not to let go

And I live on this feeling, the greatest of all feelings
Telling me not to grow cold

    Please help me get through
    And let me in you

After John died I played Kate Nash's Foundations over and over! It was one of his favourite songs, I used to hate it but it reminded me of him :D

The Scientist by Coldplay. My cousin's college friends sang it as his funeral. The line "Nobody said it was easy, No-one ever said it would be this hard"- made me break down for about a year.

This song from a band called Lifehouse is dedicated to all the young people who die on our roads every year.
I know that every county in Ireland has car crashes but Donegal is pretty bad for them. Where I am from we are guaranteed to have one young person if not more end up in a serious crash every year. Quite a few local lads have died or else been seriously....seriously injured. :(

    From Where You Are

So far away from where you are
These miles have torn us worlds apart
And I miss you, yeah I miss you

So far away from where you are
    I'm standing underneath the stars
And I wish you were here

I miss the years that were erased
I miss the way the sunshine would light up your face
I miss all the little things
I never thought that they'd mean everything to me
    Yeah I miss you
And I wish you were here

I feel the beating of your heart
I see the shadows of your face
Just know that wherever you are
    Yeah I miss you
And I wish you were here

I miss the years that were erased
I miss the way the sunshine would light up your face
I miss all the little things
I never thought that they'd mean everything to me
    Yeah I miss you
And I wish you were here

So far away from where you are
These miles have torn us worlds apart
And I miss you, yeah I miss you
And I wish you were here

    Great idea!

There's a song on Christina Aguilera's new album about the death of a loved one. The lyrcis are upbeat and the song itself is high tempo but extremely touching. Check it out:

Let me know what you think, certainly helps me through the bad days w2ith its positive message

    Little Dreamer Lyrics

Look at the stars, I will take one down for you
No matter what the distance, I’ll see it through
I’ll fill you in between the sun and moon
‘Til the end I’ll be waiting

And whenever in night, the lights go down
I know that you’ll go on to shine somehow
And even if you’re miles above the clouds
‘Til the end I’ll be waiting

Now I lay you down to sleep
I pray we’ll meet inside my dreams

So long, my little dreamer, I’ll miss your face
We’ll always stay connected through time and space
The journey that we shared but now have to leave
Will live inside of us for eternity, yeah

    Little dreamer,
    little dreamer,
    little dreamer,
    little dreamer
    Lalala

Look through the dark, there’s a compass in the sky
If ever you’re lonely and question why
Remember that I’m always by your side
‘Til the end I’ll be waiting

And even though we sleep like years apart
The galaxy away is not so far
Because we know the future is our dark
‘Til the end I’ll be waiting

Now I lay me down to sleep
I pray we’ll meet inside my dreams
If I should go before I wake
I pray our souls will join again

    http://www.elyricsworld.com/little_dreamer_lyrics_christina_aguilera.html
So long, my little dreamer, I’ll miss your face
We’ll always stay connected through time and space
And everything we hoped that could never be
Will live inside of us for eternity

So come on my little dreamer, I’ll miss your face
We’ll always stay connected through time and space
The journey that we shared but now have to leave
Will live inside of us for eternity

Destiny will be a part of you, babe (will be)
I'll feel you in the atmosphere (I'll feel you)
And nothing will be left to fear (nothing left to fear)

Little dreamer, little dreamer (Ooh, said)
Little dreamer, little dreamer (Ooh oh)
Little dreamer, little dreamer (Ooh, ooh)
Little dreamer, little dreamer (Ooh, ooh)

So long, my little dreamer, I will miss your face
We'll always stay connected through time and space (little dreamer)
And everything we hoped that could never be (so mamma)
Will live inside of us for eternity, yeah (I'll see you there)

So long, my little dreamer, I will miss your face (always, always)
We'll always stay connected through time and space (ooh oh)
The journey that we shared but now have to leave (ooh)
Will live inside of us for eternity, yeah (oh ah)

I will be with you till the end
Mmm, always be waiting 'till the end

On the way home from the burial Blackbird came on the radio and it was very fitting and somewhat uplifiting on that sad day.

Blackbird singing in the dead of night
Take these broken wings and learn to fly
    All your life
You were only waiting for this moment to arise
Blackbird singing in the dead of night
Take these sunken eyes and learn to see
    All your life
You were only waiting for this moment to be free
    Blackbird fly, blackbird fly
Into the light of the dark black night
    Blackbird fly, blackbird fly
Into the light of the dark black night
Blackbird singing in the dead of night
Take these broken wings and learn to fly
    All your life
You were only waiting for this moment to arise
You were only waiting for this moment to arise
You were only waiting for this moment to arise

After my mum died, I listened to "Have you ever seen the rain?" all the time. It was on repeat over and over and over. The lyrics didn't "fit" or don't fit the "death theme", but i will say it did help me.

Have you ever seen the rain?
Someone told me long ago, there's a calm before the storm.
I know, and it's been comin' for some time.
When it's over, so they say, it'll rain a sunny day.
I know, shinin' down like water.

I want to know, have you ever seen the rain?
I want to know, have you ever seen the rain
comin' down on a sunny day?

Yesterday, and days before, sun is cold and rain is hard.
I know, been that way for all my time.
'Til forever on it goes through the circle fast and slow,
I know, and it can't stop, I wonder.

I want to know, have you ever seen the rain?
I want to know, have you ever seen the rain
comin' down on a sunny day?

After the death of my newborn daughter, I listened to a song by Sophie B. Hawkins.

As I lay me down to sleep.

    It felt like spring time
    On this February morning
    In the courtyard
    Birds were singing your praise
I'm still recalling things you said
    To make me feel alright
I carried them with me today
    Now

As I lay me down to sleep
    This I pray
That you will hold me dear
    Though I'm far away
    I'll whisper your name
    Into the sky
And I will wake up happy

I wonder why I feel so high
Though I am not above the sorrow
    Heavy hearted
    Till you call my name
And it sounds like church bells
Or the whistle of a train
    On a summer evening
    I'll run to meet you
    Barefoot barely breathing

As I lay me down to sleep
    This I pray
That you will hold me dear
    Though I'm far away
    I'll whisper your name
    Into the sky
And I will wake up happy

It's not too near for me
Like a flower I need the rain
Though it's not clear to me
    Every season has its change
    And I will see you
When the sun comes out again

As I lay me down to sleep
    This I pray
That you will hold me dear
    Though I'm far away
    I'll whisper your name
    Into the sky
And I will wake up happy.

Tears in Heaven, by Eric Clapton. The song is about his 4 year old son who died after falling out the window of Clapton's high rise apartment.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AscPOozwYA8 (live version)

    Would you know my name
If I saw you in heaven
    Will it be the same
If I saw you in heaven
I must be strong, and carry on
    Cause I know I don't belong
    Here in heaven

    Would you hold my hand
If I saw you in heaven
    Would you help me stand
If I saw you in heaven
I'll find my way, through night and day
    Cause I know I just can't stay
    Here in heaven

    Time can bring you down
    Time can bend your knee
    Time can break your heart
    Have you begging please
    Begging please

    (instrumental)

    Beyond the door
    There's peace I'm sure.
And I know there'll be no more...
    Tears in heaven

    Would you know my name
If I saw you in heaven
    Will it be the same
If I saw you in heaven
I must be strong, and carry on
    Cause I know I don't belong
    Here in heaven

    Cause I know I don't belong
    Here in heaven

That Eric Clapton one is a beautiful song haven't heard it in a long time.

The majority of Eva Cassidy's songs helped me through many a time. They mix the sadness together with the happy memories in a really beautiful way.

    Autumn Leaves
The falling leaves drift by my window
The falling leaves of red and gold
I see your lips, the summer kisses
The sunburned hands I used to hold

Since you went away the days grow long
And soon I'll hear old winter's song
But I miss you most of all, my darling
When autumn leaves start to fall

    (Instrumental)

Since you went away the days grow long
And soon I'll hear old winter's song
But I miss you most of all, my darling
When autumn leaves start to fall

I miss you most of all, my darling
When autumn leaves start to fall

I find this song so comforting, it Beth Neilson Chapman - I find your love

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z2GDG1sNHJE

I'll catch your smile on someone's face
Your whisper in the wind's embrace
Through diamond stars and songs and dreams
I find your love in everything

The sun, the sky, the rolling sea
    All conspire to comfort me
From sorrow's edge life's beauty seems
To find your love in everything

I've come to trust the hope it brings
To find your love in everything
    Even as I fall apart,
    Even through my shattered heart

I'll catch your smile on someone's face
    .....amazing grace

This isn't song lyrics, but a poem that was given to me a long time ago. A friend of mine died tragically when we were in our late teens and I was given a copy of this poem.
It meant a lot at the time, and unfortunately there have been a few occasions since when I have passed it on to other people and family members.

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say,
But first of all to let you know that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from Heaven, where I dwell with God above,
Where there are no tears or sadness, there is just eternal Love.

Please do not be unhappy, just because I'm out of sight,
Remember that I'm with you, every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you, when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me, and said, ' I welcome you'.

'It's good to have you back again.
You were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here so badly as part of my big plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man'.

Then God gave me a list of things he wished for me to do.
And foremost on that list of mine, is to watch and care for you.
I will be beside you, every day of the week and year,
And when you're sad I'm standing there, to wipe away the tear.

And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight,
God and I are closest to you in the middle of the night.
When you think of my life on Earth, and all those loving years,
Because you're only human, there's bound to be some tears.

One thing is for certain, though my life on Earth is over,
I am closer to you now than I ever was before.
And to my many friends, trust God knows what is best.
I am not far away from you, I'm just beyond the crest.

There are rocky roads ahead for you and many hills to climb,
Together we can do it, taking one day at a time.
It was my philosophy and please I'd like for you,
To give unto the world, so the world will give to you.

If you can help someone who's in sorrow or in pain,
Then you can say to God at night, my day was not in vain.
And now I am contented that my life it was worthwhile,
Knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

When you're walking down the street and I am on your mind,
I'm walking in your footsteps, only half a step behind.
And when you feel a gentle breeze of wind upon your face,
That's me giving you a great big hug, or just a s oft embrace.

When it's time for you to go from that body to be free,
Remember you are not going, you are coming home to me.
I will always love you, from that place way up above,
I will be in touch again soon.
    P.S. God sends his love.

The day I came home from England for my Gran's funeral involved 9 hours of travelling, and several intense hours of grieving with my family, who I'd not seen for several months. When I finally got back to my parents house, I went up to my room, and just sat crying in the dark, looking over Sligo bay to the lights of Sligo town. After a few minutes, I turned on the radio, and this came on....at the time, I mis-heard the lyrics as "when you lose someone you can't replace"....

    Fix You-Coldplay

When you try your best but you don't succeed
When you get what you want but not what you need
When you feel so tired but you can't sleep
    Stuck in reverse

And the tears come streaming down your face
When you lose something you can't replace
When you love someone but it goes to waste
    Could it be worse?

    Lights will guide you home
    And ignite your bones
And I will try to fix you

And high up above or down below
When you're too in love to let it go
But if you never try you'll never know
    Just what you're worth

    Lights will guide you home
    And ignite your bones
And I will try to fix you

    Tears stream down your face
When you lose something you cannot replace
    Tears stream down your face

    Lights will guide you home
    And ignite your bones
And I will try to fix you
    (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=skUJ-B6oVDQ&ob=av3e)

And the chorus of this song, (Do You Realise...-The Flaming Lips) was in my head throughout the following few days, and has popped into my head when I miss her most.

    Do you realize
That you have the most beautiful face?

    Do you realize
    We're floating in space?

    Do you realize
    That happiness makes you cry?

    Do you realize
That everyone you know someday will die?

And instead of saying all of your goodbyes
Let them know you realize that life goes fast
It's hard to make the good things last
You realize the sun doesn't go down
It's just an illusion caused by the world spinning round

Two poems that mean a lot to my family and I:

    Do not stand at my grave and weep;
I am not there. I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am the diamond glints on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain.
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning's hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
    Do not stand at my grave and cry;
I am not there. I did not die.

    And

    When I must leave you
    For a little while,
    Please do not grieve
    And shed wild tears
And hug your sorrow to you
    Through the years,
    But start out bravely
    With a smile.

    And for my sake
    And in my name,
    Live on and do
    All the things the same.

    Feed not your loneliness
    On empty days,
    But fill each waking hour
    In useful ways.

Reach out your hand in comfort
    And in cheer,
And I, in turn, will comfort you
    And hold you near.
    And never, never
    Be afraid to die,
For I am waiting for you
    In the sky.

The Fray- How to save a life
Step one you say we need to talk
He walks you say sit down it's just a talk
He smiles politely back at you
You stare politely right on through
Some sort of window to your right
As he goes left and you stay right
Between the lines of fear and blame
You begin to wonder why you came

    CHORUS:
Where did I go wrong, I lost a friend
    Somewhere along in the bitterness
And I would have stayed up with you all night
Had I known how to save a life

Let him know that you know best
Cause after all you do know best
Try to slip past his defense
    Without granting innocence
Lay down a list of what is wrong
The things you've told him all along
And pray to God he hears you
And pray to God he hears you

    CHORUS:
Where did I go wrong, I lost a friend
    Somewhere along in the bitterness
And I would have stayed up with you all night
Had I known how to save a life

As he begins to raise his voice
You lower yours and grant him one last choice
Drive until you lose the road
Or break with the ones you've followed
He will do one of two things
    He will admit to everything
Or he'll say he's just not the same
And you'll begin to wonder why you came

    CHORUS:
Where did I go wrong, I lost a friend
    Somewhere along in the bitterness
And I would have stayed up with you all night
Had I known how to save a life

    CHORUS:
Where did I go wrong, I lost a friend
    Somewhere along in the bitterness
And I would have stayed up with you all night
Had I known how to save a life
    How to save a life
    How to save a life

    CHORUS:
Where did I go wrong, I lost a friend
    Somewhere along in the bitterness
And I would have stayed up with you all night
Had I known how to save a life

    CHORUS:
Where did I go wrong, I lost a friend
    Somewhere along in the bitterness
And I would have stayed up with you all night
Had I known how to save a life
    How to save a life

always brings a tear to my eye

I'm surprised no one mentioned "crying your heart out" by oasis.

3 years on since the sudden passing on of my mother it still helps me feel that bit better when I listened to this.

Hold up... hold on... don't be scared
You'll never change what's been and gone
May your smile (may your smile) shine on (shine on)
Don't be scared (don't be scared)
Your destiny may keep you warm

'Cause all of the stars have faded away
Just try not to worry, you'll see them someday
Take what you need and be on your way
And stop crying your heart out

Get up (get up) come on (come on)
Why you scared? (I'm not scared...)
You'll never change what's been and gone

'Cause all of the stars have faded away
Just try not to worry, you'll see them someday
Take what you need and be on your way
And stop crying your heart out

'Cause all of the stars have faded away
Just try not to worry, you'll see them someday
Just take what you need and be on your way
And stop crying your heart out

    We're all of the stars
    We're fading away
Just try not to worry, you'll see us someday
Just take what you need and be on your way
And stop crying your heart out

    Stop crying your heart out
    Stop crying your heart out
    Stop crying your heart out...

    You with the sad eyes
    don't be discouraged
    oh I realize
    it's hard to take courage
in a world full of people
you can lose sight of it all
    and the darkness inside you
can make you fell so small

But I see your true colors
    shining through
    I see your true colors
and that's why I love you
so don't be afraid to let them show
    your true colors
    true colors are beautiful
    like a rainbow

    Show me a smile then
    don't be unhappy, can't remember
when I last saw you laughing
if this world makes you crazy
and you've taken all you can bear
    you call me up
because you know I'll be there

And I'll see your true colors
    shining through
    I see your true colors
and that's why I love you
so don't be afraid to let them show
    your true colors
    true colors are beautiful
    like a rainbow

Found this song it's such a beautiful song :(

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l28Ksllbn48

    I can fly
    But I want his wings
I can shine even in the darkness
But I crave the light that he brings
Revel in the songs that he sings
    My angel Gabriel

    I can love
    But I need his heart
I am strong even on my own
But from him I never want to part
He's been there since the very start
    My angel Gabriel
    My angel Gabriel

Bless the day he came to be
Angel's wings carried him to me
    Heavenly
    I can fly
    But I want his wings
I can shine even in the darkness
But I crave the light that he brings
Revel in the songs that he sings
    My angel Gabriel
    My angel Gabriel
    My angel Gabriel

I tend to try to not listen to music when something bad happens because I don't like associating something I love with negativity, but one I would suggest is Frank Turners - Long Live The Queen for it's lyrical content!

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UIkFEEwMCNA&feature=related

I was sipping on a Whiskey when I got the call
Yeah my friend Lex was lying in the hospital
She'd been pretty sick for about half a year
But it seems liked this time the end was drawing near
So dropped my plans and jumped the next London train
I found her laid up and in a lot of pain
Her eyes met mine and then I understood
That her weather forecast wasn't looking too good
So I sat and spun her stories for a little while
Tried to raise her mood and tried to raise a smile
But she silenced all my rambling with a shake of her head
Drew me close and listen this is what she said now

"You'll live to dance another day, it's just now you'll have to dance, for the two of us, so stop looking so damn depressed and sing with all your heart that the Queen is dead"

Yeah she told me she was sick of all the hospital food
And of doctors, distant relatives, draining her blood
She said "I know I'm dying, but I'm not finished just yet, I am dying for a drink and for a cigarette"
So we hatched a plan to book ourselves a cheap hotel
In the centre of the City and to raise some Hell
They waste to all the clubs and then when everyone else is long asleep
We know we're good and done

"You'll live to dance another day, it's just now you'll have to dance, for the two of us, so stop looking so damn depressed and sing with all your heart that the Queen is dead"
And South London's not the same anymore
The Queen is dead, and the last of the great has finally gone to bed

Well I was working on some words when Sarah called me up
She said that Lex had gone asleep and wasn't waking up
And even though I knew that there was nothing to be done
I felt bad for not being there and now, well, she was gone
So I tried to think what Lex would want me to do
At times like this when I was feeling blue
So I gathered up some friends to spread the sad sad news
And we headed to the City for a drink or two
    And we sang

"We live to dance another day, it's just now we have to dance for one more of us, so stop looking so damn depressed, and sing with all our hearts, long live the Queen"

The Fray- How to save a life
Step one you say we need to talk
He walks you say sit down it's just a talk
He smiles politely back at you
You stare politely right on through
Some sort of window to your right
As he goes left and you stay right
Between the lines of fear and blame
You begin to wonder why you came

    CHORUS:
Where did I go wrong, I lost a friend
    Somewhere along in the bitterness
And I would have stayed up with you all night
Had I known how to save a life

Let him know that you know best
Cause after all you do know best
Try to slip past his defense
    Without granting innocence
Lay down a list of what is wrong
The things you've told him all along
And pray to God he hears you
And pray to God he hears you

    CHORUS:
Where did I go wrong, I lost a friend
    Somewhere along in the bitterness
And I would have stayed up with you all night
Had I known how to save a life

As he begins to raise his voice
You lower yours and grant him one last choice
Drive until you lose the road
Or break with the ones you've followed
He will do one of two things
    He will admit to everything
Or he'll say he's just not the same
And you'll begin to wonder why you came

    CHORUS:
Where did I go wrong, I lost a friend
    Somewhere along in the bitterness
And I would have stayed up with you all night
Had I known how to save a life

    CHORUS:
Where did I go wrong, I lost a friend
    Somewhere along in the bitterness
And I would have stayed up with you all night
Had I known how to save a life
    How to save a life
    How to save a life

    CHORUS:
Where did I go wrong, I lost a friend
    Somewhere along in the bitterness
And I would have stayed up with you all night
Had I known how to save a life

    CHORUS:
Where did I go wrong, I lost a friend
    Somewhere along in the bitterness
And I would have stayed up with you all night
Had I known how to save a life
    How to save a life

always brings a tear to my eye[/QUOTE]

This song has me in tears everytime I hear it. My darling beautifull best friend of so many years took her own life not long ago, and this song just hits a nerve.

One of my Dad's favourite songs, and now it's one of mine. Makes me smile/cry in equal measure.

    Vera Lynn- We'll meet again

    We'll meet again
    Don't know where
    Don't know when
But I know we'll meet again
    Some sunny day
    Keep smiling through
    Just like you always do
    'Till the blue skies
Drive the dark clouds far away

So, will you please say hello
To the folks that I know
Tell them I won't be long
    They'll be happy to know
That as you saw me go
    I was singing this song

    We'll meet again
    Don't know where
    Don't know when
But I know we'll meet again
    Some sunny day

    We'll meet again
    Don't know where
    Don't know when
But I know we'll meet again
    Some sunny day
    Keep smiling through
    Just like you always do
    'Till the blue skies
Drive the dark clouds far away

So, will you please say hello
To the folks that I know
Tell them I won't be long
    They'll be happy to know
That as you saw me go
    I was singing this song

    We'll meet again
    Don't know where
    Don't know when
But I know we'll meet again
    Some sunny day...

    "There You'll Be"-Faith Hill

    When I think back
    On these times
    And the dreams
    We left behind
    I'll be glad 'cause
    I was blessed to get
To have you in my life
    When I look back
    On these days
I'll look and see your face
You were right there for me

    [Chorus:]
    In my dreams
    I'll always see you soar
    Above the sky
    In my heart
There will always be a place
For you for all my life
    I'll keep a part
    Of you with me
    And everywhere I am
    There you'll be
    And everywhere I am
    There you'll be

    Well you showed me
    How it feels
    To feel the sky
    Within my reach
    And I always
    Will remember all
    The strength you
    Gave to me
    Your love made me
    Make it through
Oh, I owe so much to you
You were right there for me

    [Repeat chorus]

'Cause I always saw in you
    My light, my strength
And I want to thank you
    Now for all the ways
You were right there for me
You were right there for me
    For always

    [Chorus:]
    In my dreams
    I'll always see you soar
    Above the sky
    In my heart
There will always be a place
For you for all my life
    I'll keep a part
    Of you with me
    And everywhere I am
    There you'll be
    And everywhere I am
    There you'll be
    There you'll be

    Black Swan by Athlete

I waded through the darkest fields you'd imagine
Your pretty face sketched on the barrel of my gun
And I know you'll be the first to welcome me
    When I climb into eternity
    Oh, oh

The forest always kept us warm
But it doesn't feel like home anymore
And I know there's bigger mountains where you are
And a better climate for my heart
    Oh, oh

    I've been racing the clock
And I've run out of steam
I am ready for my final symphony
    Oh my body is weak
But my soul is still strong
I am ready to rest in your arms

Though many battles I have won
I lost too many friends I could count on
And I know they'll be the first to welcome me
    When I parachute into eternity
    Oh, oh

    I've been racing the clock
And I've run out of steam
I am ready for my final symphony

    Oh my body is weak
But my soul is still strong
I am ready to rest in your arms

And the rain beat down on the rooftops
    But there was no sound
    There was no sound
And all my friends and family carried me
    They carried me home
    Carried me home

    I've been racing the clock
And I've run out of steam
I am ready for my final symphony
    Oh my body is weak
But my soul is still strong
I am ready to rest in your arms
    I've been racing the clock
And I've run out of steam
I am ready for my final symphony
    Oh my body is weak
But my soul is still strong
I am ready to rest in your arms
    Oh, oh

If I Die Young - The Band Perry

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7NJqUN9TClM&feature=related

If I die young, bury me in satin
Lay me down on a, bed of roses
Sink me in the river, at dawn
Send me away with the words of a love song

    Uh oh, uh oh

Lord make me a rainbow, I'll shine down on my mother
She'll know I'm safe with you when she stands under my colors, oh and
Life ain't always what you think it ought to be, no
Ain't even grey, but she buries her baby

The sharp knife of a short life, well
    I've had, just enough time

If I die young, bury me in satin
Lay me down on a, bed of roses
Sink me in the river, at dawn
Send me away with the words of a love song

The sharp knife of a short life, well
    I've had, just enough time

And I'll be wearing white, when I come into your kingdom
I'm as green as the ring on my little, cold finger, I've
Never known the lovin' of a man
But it sure felt nice when he was holding my hand, there's a
Boy here in town says he'll, love my forever
Who would have thought forever could be severed by
The sharp knife of a short life, well
    I've had, just enough time

So put on your best boys and I'll wear my pearls
What I never did is done

A penny for my thoughts, oh no, I'll sell them for a dollar
They're worth so much more after I'm a goner
And maybe then you'll hear the words I been singin'
Funny when your dead how people start listenin'

If I die young, bury me in satin
Lay me down on a, bed of roses
Sink me in the river, at dawn
Send me away with the words of a love song

    Uh oh (uh, oh)
The ballad of a dove (uh, oh)
    Go with peace and love
Gather up your tears, keep 'em in your pocket
Save them for a time when your really gonna need them, oh

The sharp knife of a short life, well
    I've had, just enough time

So put on your best boys and I'll wear my pearls

This is an excellent song, gets the heartstrings. But also, the music and melody and the ending of the song are just great so I've included this youtube link, it's not the video for the track but you get to hear it.

    Peter Gabriel - I Grieve.

It was only one hour ago
It was all so different then
There's nothing yet has really sunk in
    Looks like it always did
    This flesh and bone
It's just the way that you would tied in
    Now there's no-one home

    I grieve for you
    You leave me
    'so hard to move on
    Still loving what's gone
    They say life carries on
Carries on and on and on and on

The news that truly shocks is the empty empty page
While the final rattle rocks it's empty empty cage
    And i can't handle this

    I grieve for you
    You leave me
Let it out and move on
    Missing what's gone
    They say life carries on
They say life carries on and on and on

    Life carries on
    In the people i meet
In everyone that's out on the street
In all the dogs and cats
    In the flies and rats
In the rot and the rust
In the ashes and the dust
Life carries on and on and on and on
Life carries on and on and on

It's just the car that we ride in
    A home we reside in
The face that we hide in
The way we are tied in
And life carries on and on and on and on
Life carries on and on and on

    Did I dream this belief?
Or did i believe this dream?
    Now i can find relief
    I grieve

In the arms of the angels, still brings a tear to my eye when ever i hear it even tho its 2 yrs since my friend passed suddenly

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jVbkz_3lO3c

Spend all your time waiting for that second chance
For the break that will make it OK
There's always some reason to feel not good enough
And it's hard at the end of the day
I need some distraction or a beautiful release
    Memories seep from my veins
Let me be empty and weightless and maybe
    I'll find some peace tonight

In the arms of the Angel far away from here
From this dark, cold hotel room, and the endlessness that you fear
You are pulled from the wreckage of your silent reverie
You're in the arms of the Angel; may you find some comfort here

So tired of the straight line, and everywhere you turn
There's vultures and thieves at your back
The storm keeps on twisting, you keep on building the lies
That you make up for all that you lack
It don't make no difference, escaping one last time
    It's easier to believe
In this sweet madness, oh this glorious sadness
That brings me to my knees

In the arms of the Angel far away from here
From this dark, cold hotel room, and the endlessness that you fear
You are pulled from the wreckage of your silent reverie
In the arms of the Angel; may you find some comfort here

You're in the arms of the Angel; may you find some comfort here

    Neadine wrote: »

That is lovely but I am in tears here reading it, Must print it off and keep it with me, having a particulary sad day today, missing my brother. Wish I could turn back the last 6 months,

    Thanks for posting this :)

    If you see my mother
    Tell her I'm keeping fine
Tell her that I love her
And I'll try and write sometime

These four lines are from a song entitled "Philomena" written by the late, great Philip Lynott from Thin Lizzy. I lost my beautiful mother to cancer on the 8th June this year, at the age of 68, and I read these lines to myself every morning when I turn on my computer.

Also, that poem "Do Not Stand At My Grave And Weep" is quite nice too. I am considering going to counselling to talk things out......

I spoke to the Social Worker(in the Hospice where Mam died) earlier today, and some tears came. I guess it is still a bit raw inside me, and will take time to come to terms with.....?

I'm sorry to hear about your Mother. it's only been about 2 weeks I'd say you might still be in shock, it's gonna be a long road and at times very difficult to come to terms with :( Counselling is indeed worth a shot sure what harm can it do. Wish you all the best with it. :)

When I was alot younger and a friend died alot of the verses from the obituary pages helped me, then I sought out lyrics from certain songs that could be applied and they helped. Been thinking alot on various people who are now gone some for many many years others more recent. Here's a few more mini lyrics/verses from an old book were I kept them some lines may sound a bit cheesy but writing them all down and keeping a collection of them all helped me anyway.

Memory lane is a beautiful place,
Where thoughts are fond and true,
Again and again I travel that lane,
    Just to be with you.

    ****

    A golden heart stopped beating,
    Two smiling eyes at rest,
God broke our hearts to prove to us,
    He only takes the best.

    ****

My life goes on without you,
But things are not the same,
It's hard to hide the heartache,
    When someone speaks your name,
    Your resting place I visit,
    And say a little prayer,
But no one knows the heartache,
When I turn and leave you there.

    ****

    God saw you getting weary,
A cure was not to be,
He put his arms around you,
    And whispered "come to me",
So keep your arms around her God,
    And give her special care,
Make up for all she suffered,
    And all that seemed unfair,
May the winds of love blow softly,
And whisper for you to hear,
That I still love you dearly,
And wish that you were here.

    ****

Dunno if these lyrics are appropriate when grieving for someone?? Maybe they're a bit selfish?? However, it is one of my favourite songs.

    Also - http://www.sing365.com/music/lyric.nsf/Nothing-Else-Matters-lyrics-Metallica/1799FBB3DA2B37574825688D00342A97 - there's another song that helps.

I'm sorry to hear about your Mother. it's only been about 2 weeks I'd say you might still be in shock, it's gonna be a long road and at times very difficult to come to terms with :( Counselling is indeed worth a shot sure what harm can it do. Wish you all the best with it. :)

When I was alot younger and a friend died alot of the verses from the obituary pages helped me, then I sought out lyrics from certain songs that could be applied and they helped. Been thinking alot on various people who are now gone some for many many years others more recent. Here's a few more mini lyrics/verses from an old book were I kept them some lines may sound a bit cheesy but writing them all down and keeping a collection of them all helped me anyway.

Memory lane is a beautiful place,
Where thoughts are fond and true,
Again and again I travel that lane,
    Just to be with you.

    ****

    A golden heart stopped beating,
    Two smiling eyes at rest,
God broke our hearts to prove to us,
    He only takes the best.

    ****

My life goes on without you,
But things are not the same,
It's hard to hide the heartache,
    When someone speaks your name,
    Your resting place I visit,
    And say a little prayer,
But no one knows the heartache,
When I turn and leave you there.

    ****

    God saw you getting weary,
A cure was not to be,
He put his arms around you,
    And whispered "come to me",
So keep your arms around her God,
    And give her special care,
Make up for all she suffered,
    And all that seemed unfair,
May the winds of love blow softly,
And whisper for you to hear,
That I still love you dearly,
And wish that you were here.

    ****

    What's that last one from?

The bit you bolded? I just found it in the paper one time and wrote it into that small book I kept when I was going through a time of grieving.

Those lyrics to the Metallica song are not selfish at all. Actually quite sad really. He goes away from the mother and takes her love for granted by the time he realises and returns home she has unfortunately passed away. Haven't heard that song so must give it a listen now.

Any music or lyrics that you connect with or feel helps then that is good. Sometimes maybe only one line or verse in a certain song will apply to you the rest may not.

My uncle died suddenly last week, and his family were trying to choose hymns for the funeral. I suggested this one for when he was leaving the church. None of them had heard of it, but they all thanked me afterwards for the choice.

    Going Home lyrics

    Going home, going home
    I'm just going home
    Quiet light, some still day
    I'm just going home
It's not far, just close by
    Through an open door
Work all done, care laid by
    Going to fear no more
    Mother's there expecting me
    Father's waiting, too
    Lots of folk gathered there
    All the friends I knew
    All the friends I knew
    I'm going home
    Nothing's lost, all's gain
    No more fret nor pain
No more stumbling on the way
No more longing for the day
    Going to roam no more
    Morning star lights the way
    Restless dream all done
    Shadows gone, break of day
    Real life begun
There's no break, there's no end
    Just a living on
    Wide awake with a smile
    Going on and on
    Going home, going home
    I'm just going home
It's not far, just close by
    Through an open door
    I am going home
    I'm just going home
    Going home, going home
    [Repeat]

If You Could See Me Now
this is the opening to my sisters' first anniversary mass in a couple weeks.

    http://youtu.be/IBaSLH_3sAw

    Lyrics;
Our prayers have all been anwered
    I finally arrived
The healing that had been delayed
    Has now been realized
    No one's in a hurry
    There's no schedule to keep
    We're all enjoying Jesus
    Just sitting at His feet

If you could see me now
    I'm walking streets of gold
If you could see me now
    I'm standing tall and whole
If you could see me now
You'd know I've seen His face
If you could see me now
You'd know the pain is erased
    You wouldn't want me
    To ever leave this place
If you could see me now

    My light and temporary trials
Have worked out for my good
To know it brought Him glory
    When I misunderstood
    Though we've had our sorrows
    They can never compare
To what Jesus has in store for us
    No language can share

Is you could see me now
    I'm walking streets of gold
If you could see me now
    I'm standing tall and whole
If you could see me now
You'd know I've seen His face
If you could see me now
You'd know the pain is erased
    You wouldn't want me
    To ever leave this place
If you could see me now

    Go On Home
    i wrote this for her

    http://youtu.be/zXVZt77HHVw

    Lyrics;
How did this time come so quickly?
Who knew we'd get here today?
This can't be right, I'm not ready
to speak the words that I have to say

Go on home, go on home,
the angels are waiting for you.
Go on home, go on home,
we give you our blessing to go on home.

I wish with my heart things were different
But we can't ask you to stay
It's time for our final farewell now
To speak the words you need us to say

Go on home, go on home,
the angels are waiting for you
Go on home, go on home
we give you our blessing to go on home.

with tears in our eyes, we released you to fly,
go on home, go on home.

    Welcome Home
this one inspired the one I wrote!
    http://youtu.be/Yf5yOn4_jHc

    Lyrics;
    [VERSE 1]
    I can't believe that I'm here
    Having to say goodbye.
And I can barely see you through
    These tears I cry.
    I close my eyes.

    [CHORUS]
    I can hear the sound
    As angels gather 'round
Saying this is where you belong
    Welcome Home!

    [VERSE 2]
There are the days that my heart aches
    wishing you were here.
But I know where you are
The hurt and the pain disappear.
    There's no more tears.

    Chorus

    Welcome Home!

    Chorus

    What a lovely sound
    Angels all around
Saying this is where you belong
    Welcome Home!
    Welcome Home!
    Welcome Home!

    Can't Cry Hard Enough
    gets me everytime.
    http://youtu.be/KFFlagRfHqk
I prefer the version by the Williams Brothers, though.

    Lyrics;
    I'm gonna live my life
like every day is the last
    without a simple goodbye
it all goes by so fast

    and now that you're gone,
    I can't cry hard enough.
No I can't cry hard enough
for you to hear me now

    I'm gonna open my eyes
and see for the first time
I've let go of you like
a child letting go of his kite

There it goes, up in the sky,
there it goes beyond the clouds
    for no reason why.
    I can't cry hard enough,
No I can't cry hard enough
for you to hear me now.

    Gonna look back in vain
    and see you standing there
    and when all that remains
    is an empty chair.

    Ya now that you're gone,
    I can't cry hard enough,
no I can't cry hard enough
for you to hear me now.

These four songs, in our grieving, have been amazing. I have cried so many times to can't cry hard enough ,and welcome home, but they are surely healing in their own way??

The last song, though, which has hit me so very, very very hard and yet brought me great sense of comfort at so many times is called Not Alone, and is by Darren Criss.

    http://youtu.be/5OJCCl5vOqg

    Lyrics
    I've been alone
    surrounded by darkness
    I've seen how heartless
    the world can be.
    I've seen you crying.
    You felt like it's hopeless.
    I'll always do my best
    to make you see

    baby you're not alone
    'cause you're here with me
and nothing's every gonna bring us down
    'cause nothing can keep me
from loving you and you know it's true
it don't matter what'll come to be
our love is all we need to make it through.

now I know it ain't easy
    (so ain't easy)
    but it ain't hard trying
    (it's so hard trying)
    everytime i see you smiling
and i feel you so close to me
    and you tell me -
    baby you're not alone
    'cause you're here with me
and nothing's every gonna bring us down
    'cause nothing can keep me
from loving you and you know it's true
it don't matter what'll come to be
our love is all we need to make it through.

    i still have trouble.
i trip and stumble trying to
    make sense of things sometimes.
I look for reasons but I don't need 'em
all I need is to look in your eyes
    and I realise
    baby I'm not alone
    'cause you're here with me
and nothing's every gonna take us down
    'cause nothing can keep me
from loving you, and you know it's true
it don't matter what'll come to be
our love is all we need to make it through.

I hope some of these can help others as they helped me.

Elliejo: That is a lovely song, always brings a tear to my eye.

I have two songs that get me through the rough days, these songs when i hear them make me cry somedays, or i listen to them and i think of thoses who have dies.

Firstly, Dance with my father - guess it says it all in the title. Beautiful song and i wish i could of danced with my father

    Dance with my Father

Back when I was a child
Before life removed all the innocence
My father would lift me high
And dance with my mother and me and then

Spin me around till I fell asleep
Then up the stairs he would carry me
    And I knew for sure
    I was loved

If I could get another chance
Another walk, another dance with him
I’d play a song that would never, ever end
How I’d love, love, love to dance with my father again

    Ooh, ooh

When I and my mother would disagree
To get my way I would run from her to him
He’d make me laugh just to comfort me, yeah, yeah
Then finally make me do just what my mama said

Later that night when I was asleep
He left a dollar under my sheet
    Never dreamed that he
    Would be gone from me

If I could steal one final glance
One final step, one final dance with him
I’d play a song that would never, ever end
‘Cause I’d love, love, love to dance with my father
    again

Sometimes I’d listen outside her door
And I’d hear her, mama cryin’ for him
I pray for her even more than me
I pray for her even more than me

I know I’m prayin’ for much too much
But could You send back the only man she loved
I know You don’t do it usually
But Lord, she’s dyin’ to dance with my father again
    Every night I fall asleep
And this is all I ever dream

Secondly, is a song that many people will be like "what the hell", but i had it playing on repeat in my car when my nan was dieing, i went to every doc appt and hospital app with her and i was there by her bedside side untill the end. For me this song is about just not giving up and fighting untill the end, this song can be used in a lot of different context.

Just listen to it with out thinkin im crazy ;)

Dont give up till its over - Tommy Fleming (Dubliners sing it to but Tommy sings it better)
Don't give up till it's over, don't quit if you can
The weight on your shoulder will make you a stronger man

Grasp your nettle tightly, though it will burn
Treat your failures lightly, your luck is bound to turn

Don't give up till it's over, don't quit if you can
The weight on your shoulder will make you a stronger man

Look at the autumn flowers how they wither and fade
With nature's hidden powers, next year they'll be re-made

Don't give up till it's over, don't quit if you can
The weight on your shoulder will make you a stronger man

Watch the full moon rising, like a ghost of the sun
Oh, dawn will be more surprising, when a new day has begun

Don't give up till it's over, don't quit if you can
The weight on your shoulder will make you a stronger man

Don't give up till it's over, don't quit if you can
The weight on your shoulder will make you a stronger man

My best friend died 2 years ago and I read this verse by David Harkins,

    She is gone.
You can shed tears that she is gone,
Or you can smile because she lived.
You can close your eyes and pray that she will come back,
Or you can open your eyes and see all that she's left.
Your heart can be empty because you can't see her,
Or you can be full of the love that you shared.
You can turn your back on tomorrow and live yesterday,
Or you can be happy for tomorrow because of yesterday.
You can remember her and only that she is gone,
Or you can cherish her memory and let it live on.
You can cry and close your mind, be empty and turn your back,
Or you can do what she would want :
Smile, open your eyes, Love and go on.

    Garth Brooks - The Dance

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sig-yj9YxIo

Looking back on the memory of
The dance we shared beneath the stars above
For a moment all the world was right
How could I have known you'd ever say goodbye
    And now I'm glad I didn't know
The way it all would end the way it all would go
Our lives are better left to chance I could have missed the pain
But I'd of had to miss the dance
    Holding you I held everything
    For a moment wasn't I the king
But if I'd only known how the king would fall
Hey who's to say you know I might have changed it all
    And now I'm glad I didn't know
The way it all would end the way it all would go
Our lives are better left to chance I could have missed the pain
But I'd of had to miss the dance
Yes my life is better left to chance
I could have missed the pain but I'd of had to miss the dance
