NCTS to Take Over VRT Process
Written By: Karl Connolly, Posted: Wednesday, August 18, 2010

The system for registering an imported car is set to change next month. From September 1 onwards, an imported car will have to be registered at a designated NCT centre, rather than at a Vehicle Registration Office. This change means those who bring a vehicle into Ireland will have more time to complete the registration process. Once the vehicle has arrived on Irish shores, the owner will have seven days to book an appointment with their designated NCT centre and 30 days to complete the entire registration procedure.

There's a huge backlog in NCT Centres already. Where are they finding the time to do this?

... something strange about this report IMHO.

I can't see NCT centres taking money on behalf of the Revenue Commisioners and completing all the other admin stuff, doesn't add up.

its bloody crazy to be honest, however I remember my old GT6 when i wanted to register it, i had awful problems as they were looking for chassis number stamp on the chassis, when its not stamped on the chassis but the on a plate. They wouldnt accept this and even when i should them all the book on the car stating where to find such numbers they still didnt accept it. Then they asked me was it a kit car !! I said no, there reply was well then we need a letter from the manufacture etc !! i told the Triumph went of business nearly 30 years ago, shug of shoulders. This was Wicklow VRO. A week later i got a call saying that they will VRT it based on my word, lol.

Can it be worse !! but in short mad NCT centre sure they cant keep up with normal work and as said above how do they do all the admin !!
    Ka Ching is right.

I think the idea is to make sure all cars coming into the country are safe before they are re-registered. i think its the same in the UK, you have to have an MoT before they will re-register.

Any link to a real article or even a Government publication to back this up?

Seems very stupid to me, NCT already taing too long to NCT cars as it is...

I can see it applying to cars under 10yo, maybe less, ie, cars that will most certainly be used on the roads from the off.

I suspect this is some kind of pay back for all the work and earnings they lost due to the scrappage scheme. Its always a kick back of some sort in this country .

I heard new (additional) staff have been recruited and will be doing the VRT testing separately.

I've heard the French being funny about this too. Just get the stamp set out and hammer a duplicate of the plate number onto the chassis/shell. Sorted.

(As a side note, a UK car first used before 1st August 1980 does not require a VIN/Chassis number to pass a MOT.)

Been hunting the net and cant find anything official about the VRT changes apart from newspaper articles
What it all refers to is new cars , so wonder if vintage and lorries will have to go to the nct station as they are a fixed fee , it all refers to spec of cars being lowered to avoid vrt

Cute fuggin whores! Are they gonna then insist you have to have an NCT as well as pay your VRT (second illegal tax). I HATE this ****.hole of a joke of a country.

Just back from the revenue, was registering a car.
They gave me a leaflet, it says----
'The Revenue Commissioners have appointed the National Car Testing Service (NCTS) to carry out a range of vehicle registration functions on their behalk.

From 1 September 2010 it will no longer be possible to register a vehicle at a Revenue Vehicle registration office (VRO). Instead, the vehicle must be brought to an NCT Centre for registration.

You must book your appointment with the NCTS within 7 days of the vehicle entering the state and have completed the registration within 30 days of the vehicle entering the state.'

Further details will be available from the 23 August.

I have a classic vehicle on the way from the states now, does this mean I will have to go to the NCT center now? I am a bit confused, I was hoping to register next Monday morning but I cannot find any information about this.

At the SIMI’s (Society of the Irish Motor industry’s) press conference today, Alan Nolan, Director General, called on the Government to allow buyers of used cars to re‐register their vehicle in their home county.

Mr. Nolan said, “At the moment, many motorists drive cars with another county’s registration plate but most would prefer to drive a car with their own county’ ‘stamp’ on it. We propose that car owners who want to do so should be able to get their registration changed to one from their county. A fee of up to €250 could be charged for this change, which the local authorities could then reinvest back into our local road network. This is an important issue for car buyers and the Motor Industry and could be implemented very quickly.”

    Ends

Legislation on Importing VehiclesPosted Jun 18 2010 by Editor with 0 Comments
Legislation pertaining to the inspection of imported vehicles will be introduced in 2010. This will ensure that all vehicles being imported must be tested, prior to registration. This inspection will be carried out by a number of designated NCT centres. The role of the VRO office will be administered by newly appointed NCT offices. The implementation date for this process has yet to be agreed.

Patwicklow, I've asked you already to stop with the political rants.

If you want to continue to post in Motors, I would ask you to ensure that your posts specifically address the content of the thread and are a recognisable attempt to develop the discussion.

If you are registering from Sept 1st on, you will have to do it at an NCT centre.

The NCT centre will visually check the chassis number on all vehicles presented for registration.

If you mean does it have to be tested: if originally registered before 01/01/1980, then it will be exempt from the NCT. Any car first registered from 01/01/1980 on will have to be tested (not in force yet, but when in force will apply to these cars).
