Hi all. I am looking at a 3 year old 320D on a private sale. Mileage is approx 25k miles. Is ca. 8k miles per year an issue in a diesel car or are they suited to much higher? Thanks in advance.

160 miles a week isn't too low really, I work with a lad who has a 2008 diesel 3 series Coupe and he wouldn't be much more I reckon. Once it wasn't driven sedately all the time it should be 100%.

That is a very low mileage for that car.

Low miles won't do a diesel any good but if its been serviced correctly it should be ok

I don't get that. How would low miles be bad? Miles are miles surely?

There are a number of reasons why low miles is bad, for both petrol an diesel engines.

It mainly has to do with how the car was driven. If it doesn't warm up correctly you will increase the wear on the engine and its components. Short journeys put a lot of pressure on the engine, cooling systems and clutch generally

Modern diesels also need a good run every couple of weeks so they can clean out their emissions systems, DPF filters and the like.

Something I've noticed with low mileage cars is that they tend not to be serviced correctly as they aren't doing large mileages. Not a good thing!

I have no reason to suspect that the BMW in question has any issues. But also as they wear their miles well I would check its history carefully, especially if it has been imported

hey thanks a million for that information johnos! the mrs has a diesel and im all the time at her to start the car,let it run for a few mins before taking it on her short journey and let the turbo cool down when she is finished her journey by again letting the engine idle for a few mins.

    thanks again

She is better off to drive it asap after starting it and get it warmed up to speed. I believe the turbo needing to be cooled down is after a long hot run such as motorway miles but it won't do it any harm the way you are doing it currently.

There is no harm in give it the beans every now and again once it has been warmed correctly to help clean out the system. I've never hard a car/van fail an emissions test this way or hard any issues.
