Regular Driving Tests

I think that for very time you renew your licence (every 10 years), get penalty points or claim (person in the wrong) for an accident you should get driver tested. Obviously at the cheaper fee than they currently have

Would this cut out the shocking bad driving written about here regularly.

EDIT: Mods- can you pls move to one of the suggested places by the poster below (tho' I don't actually think it can be categorised in either and I think this is the most appropriate place for it) But just so I don't get banned mostly.

And Cookie if you don't like my post perhaps report it!!!!

You're the one suggesting this system.
why not outline the reasons why the punishment for driving on a motorway with no traffic or roadworks at 82 km/h should be to do a driving test?

or how it would improve road safety?

what cheaper fee do you suggest? how much does it cost to provide a driver test? how would you account for the waste of peoples time doing a test?

A little, even circumstantial evidence to how your proposal would improve road safety might be a start.

I believe they have some kind of option of either doing a speed awareness course thing, or getting fine/ points on your license for the speeding tickets in the UK. Women tend to take the course, blokes tend to take the fine/ points option.

    Great suggestion OP!

Clearly, drivers aren't regulated and wrapped enough in red tape with constantly falling speed limits, enforced by speed cameras everywhere, penalty points, annual NCTs in the works, falling blood alcohol limits (despite there being no information whatsoever about accidents caused by drivers in the 50 to 80 mg/l range). Not to mention a Driver Testing System that, until not long ago, had people waiting up to 60 weeks (that's right one year and two months) for driving tests.

We should all take the OPs advice and regulate drivers mercilessly to the point where you'd need to be lawyer to get behind the wheel.

Oh and by the way, the costs of the driving test are going up (along with the possibly soon to be annual NCTs) because the government is broke and can't afford to "subsidise" them anymore.

The only one of those that can be claimed to be red tape might be the NCT.

Speed limits do not cause the driver any additional hassle, just one of the rules of being on the road.
Speed cameras are admittedly just a method of earning money and nothing to do with saftey, but once it doesn't take your picture there is no additional hassle or red tape for drivers.
Penalty points are again imposing nothing on drivers, unless they choose to break some other rule which warrants gaining some points on their license.
Alcohol limits are also not extra burden on drivers, although you could maybe claim they are effecting publicans turnover.

NCT annually is a bit of overkill though so you can have that one.

Speed limits ARE additional hassle if they're nonsensical which many in Ireland are.

Nope, that would just mean that the driver didn't allow enough time for their journey and are too impatient. They are not a hassle, although there are many stupid and inappropriate ones.

They are a rule of the road, and not an additional hassle or red tape for drivers.
