Slight Correction.........the material you point to is CBgM which is 'Cement Bound grannular material', a subsitute for capping layer and sub-base.

Note though, a "2+1 road" as the NRA describes it is actually a D2+1, since it is a dual carraigeway - there is a central barrier. S3 or S2+1 would refer to say, a section of S2 with a climbing lane.

D1 - dual carraigeway with one lane in each direction (rare, but such creatures do exist in places).

They changed that because Accident implies that no one was at fault. Considering that the vast majority of crashes are caused by human error, incident is probably more appropriate.

Today is the final day of the two-day conference in Italy discussing "The future of Trans-European Transport Networks".

The development of Trans-European Networks (transport: road, rail, water & air, energy and telecommunications) is one of the policies of the EU:

The idea of Trans-European Networks (TEN in the EU jargon) emerged by the end of the 1980s in conjunction with the proposed Single Market. It made little sense to talk of a big market, with freedom of movement within it for goods, persons and services, unless the various regions and national networks making up that market were properly linked by modern and efficient infrastructure.

The construction of Trans-European Networks is also an important element for economic growth and the creation of employment

The Treaty establishing the European Union provides a sound legal basis for the TENs. Under the terms of Chapter XV of the Treaty (Articles 154, 155 and 156), the European Union must aim to promote the development of Trans -European Networks as a key element for the creation of the Internal Market and the reinforcement of Economic and Social Cohesion.

This development includes the interconnection and interoperability of national networks as well as access to such networks.

The development of the Trans-European Road Network (T-ERN) is just one part of the development of Trans-European Transport Networks:

The Trans-European Transport Networks are a planned set of road, rail, air and water transport networks designed to serve the entire continent of Europe. The TEN-T networks are part of a wider system of Trans-European Networks (TENs), including a telecommunications network (eTEN) and a proposed energy network (TEN-E or Ten-Energy). The European Commission adopted the first action plans on trans-European networks (transport, energy and telecommunications) in 1990. The transport network is known as TEN-T.

TEN-T envisages coordinated improvements to primary roads, railways, inland waterways, airports, seaports, inland ports and traffic management systems, so as to provide integrated and intermodal long-distance high-speed routes for the movement of people and freight throughout Europe. A decision to adopt TEN-T was made by the European Parliament and Council in July 1996, and as a result of this, the EU works to promote the networks by a combination of leadership, coordination, issuance of guidelines, and the funding of aspects of development through a series of projects.

These projects are technically and financially managed by the Trans-European Transport Network Executive Agency (TEN-T EA), which was established exactly for this purpose by the European Commission in October 2006.

The Trans-European Road Network "is to include motorways and high-quality roads, whether existing, new or to be adapted, which have one or more of these characteristics:"

they play an important role in long-distance traffic
they bypass the main urban centres on the routes identified by the network
they provide interconnection with other modes of transport
they link landlocked and peripheral regions to central regions...

The most visible manifestation in Ireland of T-ERN roads has been the signing of European Route numbers on some recently constructed sections of motorway/HQDC.

European Routes (E-roads) in Ireland include the E-01 (Rosslare Harbour-Larne Harbour: N25, N/M11, M50, N/M1, A1, M1, A12, M2, A8(M), A8), the E-30 (Cork-Rosslare Harbour: N25), the E-16 (Derry-Belfast: A6, M22, M2), the E-20 (Shannon Airport-Dublin: N19, N18, M/N7) and the E-201 (Cork-Portlaoise: N/M8).

but now that I know what LILO stands for, can someone explain what it actuall is?

The Word Is Bor

LILO's are used to prevent traffic from crossing the centreline of a carriageway. Traffic can only turn off the road to the left and can only access the road by turning left.

For all my searching i couldn't find a good image of a LILO but i found this image on wikipedia with 2 RIROs on the near side of the image.

someone here (or in commuting & T) said the Loughrea link road wasn't a ws2, it just had hard shoulders.
Isn't this wide Single carriageway 2 lane? as opposed to S2 being single carriageway no hard shoulders - like the n65 from the old N6 south towards Kilimor, or the old N6 from Cappataggle towards Aughrim?
