Does anyone have any opinions on purchasing a second hand iPhone in comparison to a brand new one from a shop other then perhaps having no receipt/warranty?

Not really. But if I was buying Adverts.ie would be my first stop.

I bought a second hand O2 Irish 3G last year from ebay, it was still in warranty.

It developed a fault and I contacted Apple. They replaced it for me.

When O2 started to unlock them, they unlocked mine with no hassles.

I would say battery and screen performance most important thing to look out for. Battery life supposedly nosedives after 2-3 years so the 3G will start losing performance soon. Look out for dead pixels obviously too.

I would expect on adverts.ie that the seller provide receipt and details of warranty and what type of unlocking was done on the phone. It's easy to decipher whether a seller on adverts.ie is dodgy or the real deal genuine seller.
