    Hi,

As an employer am I entitled to ask for some sort of proof of an employees relatives death when I have given them compassionate leave? I ask this because there were no death notices for this person.

    Thanks

It's one of those trust situations...
If you feel your being taken advantage off then maybe... I've never done it though heard of it being done... did you try www.rip.ie, I've looked on occasion.
Do you have any direction/policy on what relative death gets time off... Anything outside that is holidays or good will on your behalf..

On the face of it, yes you would be entitled to ask for proof.

An employee is only entitled to compassionate leave on the death of very close family members.

Compassionate leave on the death of say, a Granny, would be entirely at your own discretion. You could just give them the time off on the understanding that you would like some form of proof when the employee returns to work - a mass card, obituary, etc.
