I just got my results...not what I needed, still in shock. I'll admit I was quite lazy this year and did very little study. I missed alot of school too as I was really sick. But I still don't really know what to do now. I got 470 today...well below the 515(minimum) I needed for Biomedical, Health and Life Sciences in UCD...it was my dream course but theres no way I'll get it..:(. I used to want to do medicine but since I NEVER studied last year I left it off the CAO, and I didn't do Chemistry either. Should I repeat and take up Chemistry? Would that course be possible to do in a year? Or should I do Biomedical Science in DIT? That's the only course on my CAO I'm going to get now with my points....I don't know if I'd like it. I need to decide soon because the principle sent a notice out saying that all students who wish to repeat have to have notified the school by the 23rd.OH God WHY didn't I study?..:(

Your result is a fantastic result even if it is under your requirements. Try searching for PLC courses in your selected field. It's possible then that you could get into your chosen college after that.

It really isn't the end of the world. If you can, talk to your guidance counsellor. It's their job to help you.

    Chin up.

Yes, they are crying out for Chemists. You got a good score despite your testimony, with application you'll probably do well.

you could do a year in DIT and try to transfer?
Is that course really do different that you'd hate it?

Theres usually lots of similar courses in different colleges, that will all vary in points.I'm sorry but you should have thought of this during your application. thats why we have second and third choices.

Theres a back door in to most courses. Even if some of them do take a couple of years. Might be worth looking at the DIT course, and if its similar enough to the UCD one you might be able to look into moving to the UCD one at some stage down the line. Possibly after graduating the DIT one though so like I said, could take a few years. Other wise keep an eye out for any open courses that are in any way relevant to the one you want to do.

there's UCD transfer information. I know in some universities you only have to do about a year or less in a different university, and can then transfer. Sometimes if you have done similar modules already you can exempt for those.

Can I just say about the bold bit. There's absolutely no guarantee that you're going to like any course. They can look great on paper and then just not be right for you.

I got my first choice 3 years ago(music, my dream course :P), hated it and dropped out. Went back to college this year after getting my second choice (missed first by 5points) and I couldn't be happier that I missed out on first choice.

There's nothing you can do about your results now so deep breath, wait until monday and see what happens. Remember, you can always drop out if you don't like the course in DIT. I know everyone is saying it but there are always ways around these things.

e I think I'd like the course, it's just I'm sure if I'd like DIT. One of my brothers went there and he said it was great, my cousin went there and she hated it and left so I guess I'm just nervous about it. I don't know Dublin well and my sister is in UCD so I thats why I want to go there.......I'm just gunna have to sit tight til Monday I guess...:D

DIT is a great college, I was there for my year of music. Loved the atmosphere, I'm still great friends with the people I met there, just didn't like my course. Classes are smaller than those in UCD and you're on one small campus (Kevin Street for you I assume?) instead of huuuuuge UCD.

Don't be scared either, everyone going to Dublin for the first time will be in the same boat, you'll get used to the places you need to know quickly. You'll make friends with dubs and they can show you around. :D

And like I said, if it turns out you don't like it you can always drop out. Don't ever feel there's any shame to dropping out. Plenty of people do it. :)

Best of luck for Monday too, you did a great leaving cert. Be proud of that!

    470? bad? ........

    .....

I would usually say "Don't repeat" as most students just carry the same deficit in ability/work ethic into their repeat year

But if you are really serious that you did little study and still got 470 points then you are a very bright student indeed.

With serious hard work you should surely achieve your goal next year

Don't get down, it's all relative. For someone aiming for 600 points, 560 is back. For someone aim for 200 points, 140 is bad. It's all relative. :)

Unless you have a really good reason for not wanting DIT I'd say go for it, I've lost track of the number of people who loved courses they thought they'd hate and vice versa

OP are there not similar courses you could go for with lower points and where you meet the grades?

Chemistry might be tough to do in one year. There's a lot in it.

There is a lot in Chemistry alright to get covered in a year, but with a bit of effort and maybe a grind once per week outside of the classroom, it is doable. Its one of the shortest courses on the Leaving Cert Course.

Got Biomedical Science in DIT this morning but I think I'm just goin to repeat now, I'm only 17 anyway..and I'll actually work this time though (fingers crossed..:D)..Thanks for all the help!;)

You dont need chemistry to get it to nuig or ucd but the course is a year longer. if you dont want to repeat do another science and see if you can transfer
