    Hi,

My brother like everyone today got his LC results. He did not get (anywhere near) the points to get into the course he wanted and I think he may have failed some subjects although I am not sure at yet. (He is upset)

I am wondering if anyone knows –

    1) can you actually Fail your LC if you fail subjects
    2) Can you do a PLC course if you fail or do you have to re sit the exam?

I am trying to find a route for him to get to college.

Does anyone know anything about PLC courses at all? Where to find one how to apply?

    Any help would be appreciated.

Hey,I don't know if this helps but my brother failed maths in his LC and didn't want to repeat so he went to Cavan and did a course,he then had enough points to Tallaght IT.
A friend of mine did a computer course and that too added points.
I'm sure if you look up PLC courses you'll find something.:)

Well for one thing, you can't fail the leaving cert. You just fail a subject.

You can apply to a PLC course if you failed a subject, however some PLC courses have a special requirements i.e. C3 maths. Check that before hand.

What does he want to do exactly? I can give a hand.

In a PLC I did loads of people were repeating maths. In fact the PLC college had weekly evening maths classes and held the exam in June.

not to mention PLC courses finish at least a month before the Leaving cert, plenty of study time.

Hi well a little more facts now. He failed History passed the 3 core subjects although I think he got D3-D2 in ordinary in all of them. Highest mark in Higher was a D1.

The course he was planning on doing was Bachelor Of Science in Computing. after year one you branch off and specialise in an area. You needed 200 points I believe and he only got 160.

He is now thinking about repeating but I honestly dont think for him that would be the best option. He is not going to work any harder in LC this time round but I think a PLC course being a route to college might give him the kick he needs to work harder at his grades.

Im just not sure how I find a course that might help him get into the course he wants?

What does he want to do? I run a PLC course and should be able to fill you in. Sounds very possible as he did well.

I'd definitely recommend doing a plc course. i applied for loads of science courses but didn't get the maths grade and got 340 points (not enough for any course). so i did a science plc course which was great. the class sizes are small and staff are generally very approachable and supportive. you get the opportunity to really figure out what you want to study without committing to a 3/4 year course. plc courses cover a lot of material, they are known for having a more practical side than 3rd level courses, for example practical training and work placements. i definitely benefitted from this as i got a job in a hospital lab weeks after finishing my course.
after working for a few years i went back and did another plc. this was even better than the first one i did and now i'm starting in UCD in september.
not getting enough points in the leaving cert is definitely not the end of the world. if oyu work hard enough you'll get to where you want to be eventually.

I think he wants to work with computers but I honestly dont think he knows what he wants to do which is why I think a PLC course would benefit him more than going back and resitting his LC. He likes the course I mentiones as you could branch off after year on in what you likes the most. Can you offer any information to me? I have never looked into PLC so Im a bit useless and I want to give him soem useful info about where he can go.

Also have I missed deadlines for attending this year?

    Any help would be appreciated!

if he's not going to study in the leaving cert I hope he's able to work in college. PLC's are fairly easy but in College you really have to be interested. he kinda needs to make sure he knows what he's doing.
Lots of parts of computer courses are very dull and often include maths and business on top of the programming.
The Computer Applications course in my college has both the biggest number of students and the highest drop-out rate. So many people come in not really understanding how much there is to computers.

Anyway, I recommend you go check the university websites for a FETAC link
