Finally got around to watching this last night and wanted to see what people's opinion is on it. I thought that it was absolutely fantastic, there is so much tension in the
    Russian roulette
scenes. It really shows the effect that the Vietnam war had on the soldiers and
Nicky's death was one of the most tragic moments I've ever witnessed in film

I'm very close to thinking that this is one of the best movies that I've ever seen but I did think the start was a bit slow and they didn't need an hour on really what was only background information. It does bring you closer to the characters though and it really throws you into the deep end of the war.

yep - it is a powerful film without a doubt, very harrowing in places and really shows some of the horrors that happened over there at the time.

I'd agree with the OP in that it does take a while to get going, but some would argue that this in itself is part of the impact of the film i.e. living life as normal in a slow sleepy US town, going to work day in day out, drinking with buddies, trying to build a relationship with someone you like, going to weddings etc and then all of a sudden, you are pointing a loaded gun at your head...wow

    Great cast also BTW

Yeah, definitely one of my favourites.

I'd disagree that the first part needs chopping though. I know its an unusual way of pacing, but I do think it's doing more than just adding back story. It's like a three act play, and the war parts wouldn't have as much power if you hadn't gone into such details of their previous lives, in my opinion.

Full Metal Jacket is like this too, except the beginning is even more different to the rest.

I found it dull beyond belief for the most of it, the wedding scene is longer than most actual weddings, the Vietnam stuff is great but I dunno, its overrated for the most part.

Rubbish, it's a classic in any cinema fans book. Maybe you were born in the 1980's...

Nope, the vet in a wheelchair was done much better in Coming Home. The scene where the guy plays the piano was trite, and the whole movie stunk of New York-trained actors. Also, that Russian Roulette scene was dreamt up for the movie and never happened. Go tell the spartans was a better movie about the Vietnam war but guess you wouldn't have seen it?

The film may feature events that never happened, but to me this doesn't matter. The loaded guns were frightening, yes, but it was the amazing acting, the near constant tension from act two onwards, the looks in Walken's and De Niro's eyes when doom seemed just a click away: THEY are what made this such a powerful film for me.

I believed in these characters, I wanted them to have a happy ending, and I felt their pain as everything went to hell. I felt exhausted after it finished, spent, cos I felt like I'd gone through so much with them.

They just don't make films like this anymore:)

I'd agree that it has a slow start,I wasn't really getting into it much but the person who was watching it with me told it was great and it was! The slow start was definitely worth it,the ending was fantastic and has stuck with me since.

    I think it's a brilliant film.

I'd like to ask the OP and any other film viewers who have only seen that film for the first time recently, How much did you know about it already? And previously did you recognise references to the film in other areas from TV ads to The Simpsons?

One of my favourite films. The wedding and all the stuff at the start is important to build up the characters. I don't think it would be half the film without that. If you want a vietnam film watch platoon, deer hunter is a lot more than just a war movie
