Over charged for kitchen fitting?

Hi all just looking for some advice about possibly being over charged for a new kitchen fitting.

We recently had builders in fitting a bathroom, i was away towards the end of the job and when i returned my Mother informed me she had asked them to fit a new kitchen for her which work had already started on. I asked to see the quotation given and it was a shade over €5k. I have no experience whatsoever in pricing for jobs like these but this seems pretty high to me.

For info the kitchen is about 20 feet long and the work listed on the quotation was stripping the old kitchen, electrics, plumbing, re fitting and re tiling. No new appliances we're included in the price, only new appliance going in is a new cooker which was not included in the quote.

Maybe i'm just being paranoid but does this price seem too high to anyone else?

Did you get quotes from other builders? Can you still do this at all? Normally there's no hassle getting a tradesman to give a quote, except if the job is already under way or done, then they may wonder what's the point.

No unfortunately not, i'd usually insist on getting 3 quotes before going ahead but she tends to just hand over money to the first quote. I was thinking about asking a tradesman to come down and have a look but like you said i doubt any would bother given it's almost completed.

Fitting a kitchen you bought elsewhere normally costs €500 max ( if complicated and a plumber is required for an hour or two as well)

its hard to price a job without taking everything into consideration but in future ALWAYS get a handful of quotes because the differnces can be astonishing esp with the amount of tradesmen doing nothing thesedays

With retiling that lot should cost no more than €2000 - €2500 including the skip and VAT @13.5%.

It sounds high alright, but not beyond the bounds of reason.
We have no idea how much tiling, wiring, plumbing etc is involved.

Obviously she should have got a few quotes before starting, but if she's agreed to this already and the work has started I don't see what you can do about it.

Yes, nothing you can do now, so really you might be better off leaving it well alone, if it does turn out to be too high she will be pissed off, and always reminded/thinking of the kitchen as a being a foolish bad deal. If it turns out fine and she is none the wiser she is happy -though she has not realised or been taught the lesson that she should get several quotes first.

exactly -with almost no info there no way to tell

the kitchen could be very basic or very luxurious

we would have to price all the materials first ,then figure out if they over charged for labour

Sorry i should have included that info in the op. They supplied the kitchen which is mdf with a laminate counter top. It has 8 base units and 3 wall units.

I know there is really nothing i can do if we were over charged bar not recommending them to people for future work, it's really more for my own peace of mind.
