Hi, regular user going un-reg'd for this one. Don't think I want many people to know that I need this kind of help.

To everyone, I'm happy; but inside, I've been battling with feelings of sadness and of hopelessness for many, many months. I don't want to use that often thrown about word "Depression" just yet, but I honestly think I'm headed in that direction.

I do not know where I should go to look for help, and I would prefer something of a 'personal recommendation' on this. Does anyone know who would be a good therapist/psychiatrist to talk to?

Just some info that might help: I'm male, early 20's, living in South Dublin/North Wicklow.

There has been no traumatic incident in my life so far (no bad breakups, no deaths in family, etc.) but I just have these feelings an awful lot lately, and I just feel like I have nobody to talk to at all, and that maybe a visit to someone who is trained to help people with these kinds of problems might help me somewhat.

Also, to anyone who would know, would a visit to a psychiatrist go on any kind of a permanant medical record? Something that potential future employers would look at? I have aspirations to join the Army or the Gardaí. I don't know how favourably it would be looked upon by these organisations if they saw that I had attended a psychiatrist (despite it all, there is still a negative stigma attached to seeking help these days).

I really do appreciate anyone who could offer me any advice on who to see or any information that they may have. Thank you so much in advance.

Hi, I am so sorry that you are going through a rough time emotionally right now. When I read your post it catapulted me back about thirty years when I was your age and feeling very like what you describe. It is a very lonely sad place to be. However, there is loads of help and support out there you do not have to go this route alone. I would advice that you go to your GP get checked out physically for sometimes you could have something physically wrong with you that is causing this. If nothing physically wrong ask him to refer you to a Counsellor/Psychotherapist. Find a friend/sibling you trust and tell them how you feel. Ask for and take all the support you need right now and you will be allright. I am so glad that you had the courage to reach out to night.

They say the best thing to do is to be referred to a psychologist/psychiatrist through your own GP. Have a talk with them and see how you feel after that.

It's tough sometimes out there, just hang tough... You're a lot stronger than you think you are!:)
