    Ladies and Gents,

I need some adivce, I`m 20 years of age starting college in 3 weeks. My parents have sold the house and moved to spain so I`ve no house of my own, I`m living with my girlfriend at the minute.

Apart from having no place of my own I`ve no job and have no form of income, My parents left me nothing.Thankfully my girlfriends mother likes me and is not looking for rent and feeding me. I`m going to need to apply for a grant but since I`m under 23 and the VEC issue the grant based on my parents income so essentialy I beleive I`m screwed. Does anybody have any suggestions for me.

    Cheers guys.

You can't get assessed as an independent candidate if you're under 23.......it's the law.
However, there are one or two ways to be classed as an exceptional circumstance.
1 Go to a social worker. Explain your circumstances. If they write an official letter of support it could help.
2 Go to a guard same as above.

However the fact that you have no other documentation to back-up your claim - or even to prove to the social worker/guard means that it's unlikely. Also the fact that someone is essentially supporting you doesn't help.
It's then up to the discretion of the Local authority/VEC, unless you try appealing to the minister (after they reject your claim and first appeal.)
    You've also left it a bit late....Sorry!
    I'd say get a part-time job.

I don't mean this to sound harsh, but is there something wrong with you that you can't get a job? Obviously it would great to settle into college and not have to worry about balancing work and academia, but for the majority of people nowadays it's a reality. It sucks that your parents have left and you can't stay at the family home, but maybe you should think about the fact that you're technically an adult and learn to stand on your own two feet... plenty of people make it work somehow.
