hi i'm trying to apply for the driving test online - i filled in all the relevant information and it never gave me the option of choosing my date to do the test (i live in Cork) so i pressed the back button to see if there was something i missed and then when i went to continue again it says 'you already have an open application' for this test category and won't let me go any further!

Anyone know what the problem is?

I remember doing something similar before. If the test application hasn't yet gone through, you have to wait a few hours before trying again. That should clear up the problem

I'm not sure if Cork allows you to pick a date, but usually the pick a date screen will appear up after you pay for the test.

Oh AFTER you pay?! AAAAH! Ok that is the problem then - i thought it should have come up before that so i panicked and clicked back and that's when all the trouble started! Thanks i will try again later:)

I did the exact same when I was booking my first test - I didn't want to 'commit' to it (i.e. by paying) when I felt like I missed a step!

Worked for me today for Cork also - but like you I was sure that the website obviously wasn't delivering what it said it could as I had to pay before picking date. Was impressed that I was only waiting a month.

    Now, to book NCT.

I am so annoyed though - i'm just after booking it now and when the option came up to select a date there are only 4 dates in mid september free!! I was under the impression that you could book a few months in advance (i thought that was the whole point!) I can't do my test on any of those days as i'll be on holidays in the states so now i don't know what to do....that was the reason i was booking it so i would have it over with and be ready to do the test at like the end of October or something! I'm so p***ed off!

Don't pick a date, get your number from them and email them with it including the dates you are not available and a period in which you would like to be given an appointment. I found them very helpful. Say you'll take a cancellation if it's before the date you go. Then ring them in a couple of weeks.

lleahy as spurious was saying you do not have to pick a date. Cork is only 1 of 5 in ireland where the option was there. As I booked mine yesterday I am certain in saying that after the payment step you got onto the calendar as you saw, and about two appointments per day were available between september 13th and 19th, I didn't click on for other months as I rather it sooner - either way I am nearly 100% that on top rightish of screen there was an option saying 'i can't do my test on any of these dates'. you have it paid for and your application number, I am sure it is just a matter of waiting for the generic date perhaps or else sending them an email with your details and outlining when you can't do date. Don't fret. try that sure.
