MBOX 2 as Windows Sound Card?

    Hey there lads,

Asking on behalf of a mate who is setting up his first DAW rig - MBOX 2 and pro tools LE. I dropped by last night to see how he was getting on and was surprised to find that I can't use the MBOX for things like it-unes playback or YouTube audio. It plays back Pro tools audio just fine but I wasn't able play any 'Windows' sounds from it, no matter what I tweaked in the Control Panel. Has Vista beaten me or is there something more to it?

Also, this marked my first exposure to PT LE. Was decidedly under-whelmed, particularly with the plug-ins on offer.

he either needs the latest 8.0.4 drivers or else a program called digiMMEhelper to use mbox as a windoze card.

    links on DUC.

Thanks for the detailed response. Think it might actually be LE 7, he's had it knocking around for a good while before he got the chance to set things up.

tres dumb suggestion coming up cos I've never used an mbox but here goes ... could he install asio4all and then select the mbox as the preferred device while doing his non pro tools bits and bobs?

Just curious cos I do this with my fasttrack pro doo-hickey and can switch back and forward on the fly between it and the internal chip on my vista lappy. Sorry if this is a blind alley mate.

    @ TP:

then he'll need the digiMMEhelper program unless he upgrades to PT8

    @OG

digidesign hardware doesnt recognise asio4all. only digi asio drivers unfortunatly.

Slight caveat here - I had to install the Digi 8.0.4 drivers to get the MBOX2 device recognised...but I switch to ASIO4All within my DAW as the latency is much lower than the ASIO driver provided by Digidesign. It worked when I had PT LE 8 briefly installed and it's what I always use in Cubase 5.

how did you get it working? i dont even have the option to select it in reaper or protools but i'd prefer to use it to digi asio if possible.

yet if i plug in an old m-audio interface its selectable.

It's on Win7 (64-bit) so I'm not sure if that has anything to do with why it's working for me. I installed PT8 LE & drivers, then the ASIO4all drivers and uninstalled PT8 LE. But I did start with the beta driver install guide (fairly big pdf install guide called "Pro Tools LE 8 Win7 Tutorial") and while downloading the 8.0.3 beta drivers I found out the 8.0.4 (64-bit) drivers had been released that very same day so I went with them instead after following the guide to the point where it tells you to download/install the 8.0.3 version. Note there had been a little bit of trickery going on such as leaving the card unplugged when you are prompted to plug it in during the install etc.

I still have the pdf I used if you are using Windows/oze and really want to get it working on that OS. I'm not a PT user but the ASIO4All driver did have lower latency when I briefly tested it. These are my options in Cubase...ASIO4All performs much better for me than the digi ASIO driver.

i have the option for the driver but no hardware shows up as connected to it.

i think i know why. pt7.4 drivers are installed here because i use protools. as far as i can see its only the latest pt drivers that offer WDM drivers (which asio4all needs to link to) and unfortunatly i have zero interest in going back to pt8.

    balls to digi.
