Not hard to try and post results. It's unlikely to break it. Unplug mains. Unplug cables to drive, reconnect mains and test.

If it works then unplug mains and remove drive physically.

Let us know how it goes. :)

slightly related..i assume from your post i can use my old sky box and another sky + box to receive FTA channels and what do i need to do to use them.
Thinking of disconnecting from Sky and going the FTA route but if i take the card out of either box, it tells me to put the card in..

Any help appreciated. Not having much fun with the search function on this

Ignore the message. it only does that on Pay channels,
    select Guide
if it's changed to UK guide, then 101 is BBC.
If it's still Irish Guide then
    1. put card in
    2. go Sky News 501
    3. press red
    4. Wait for interactive to load
    5. remove card
    6. press backup and ignore errors.

Most boxes switch to UK guide with all BBC and ITV etc by unplugging mains and reconnecting without a card. Some only work with procedure above.
Putting even an expired/cancelled Irish sub card will at once revert to Irish Guide (EPG) with most BBC and all ITV missing.

You may need to re-enable "Adult channels" and disable any Parental settings or else the box may look for card and PIN even on C4, ITV or BBC after 9pm.
