Hi all just wondering is there many part time jobs for students in Athlone?
I am starting in Sept as a mature student so any help with this would be great!

    Many thanks

Are you staying down weekends in Athlone?
Meself and a couple of lads applied for a feckload of jobs a couple of years ago when I was starting 1st year and you'd really need to be down there at weekends as well as midweek to get anything. I know of a few people who got jobs alright, mostly in the hotels around Athlone. Some people (I'm on a design course) took up freelance jobs to make a few bob, I don't know what course you're doing and if it's suited to any sort of freelance work though..

Hi Fairycakes, As Bo said I think if you were available weeknds it would really improve your chances. It always helps to bring in your cv and have a quick chat with the manager as they are recieving countless applications. Good luck!

Right, here's my 2 cents. I've had 2 part time jobs and some other experience in my time in Athlone IT so bear with me :P

The first year I was in college I could not get ANY weekend work at all, but I managed to get a job back at home.

The second year I was there, I got nothing and was pretty broke for that whole year

Third year I managed to get a job in Smyth's in Athlone. They hire evening part time workers, so I done 3 evenings a week and the odd weekend when asked. It was grand.

OP, there's a few places that will take on weekend work. Smyth's will be taking on part time christmas workers in the coming months, as will Argos, Petworld and some other large chain stores. It can be a bit of a pain though, attending lectures, then working weekday evening work afterwards, it does get tiresome, but if you have no other choice.... Smaller chain stores would generally be looking for weekend staff. There's always somewhere hiring from my view. Just a walk through town over the weekend gone by I seen 4 shops advertising for weekend jobs.

I think on the surface of things, weekend work would suit you ideally, and just scavenge around as much as you can for anything you can get. Hotels and such would be much harder to scope out a job for the time being. Hope that helps :)

Try the chippers. I know loads of students over the years who worked in McDonalds & Supermacs. I cooked a hell of a lot of burgers to pay my way through college. Their busiest times are evenings and weekends!

I worked in Xtra-Vision for 2.5 years, it's probably the best job for a student in the whole of Athlone however you must commit to the weekends and holidays if you're to be considered there when a position opens.

To this day, it is the only job I've had that I looked forward to going in to do!

Have you considered the Back To Education Allowance ?

You have to of been unemployed or a period of 9 months, but the social welfare office seems to be under the impression that you have to of been unemployed for a period of 3 months, and im not gonna tell them how to do there job :D

What times during the evenings did you work? Cause most shops close at 6pm. Such a pain with my lectures this year, all end at 6 pm.

How about the fast food restaurant? This kind of restaurants are usually late-night.
Does anyone have the information about the requirement for part-time job in fast food restaurants, such as Subway, Mcdonald's ?

As long as you're competent and have good English they'll consider you. There's also a Supermac's in town along with several chippers so you could try there too.
