Difference in Profile front and rear

I've notice some cars have lower profile tyres on the rear than on the front. I would have expected the lower profile on the front not that back.

Is the difference so little 35 vs 40 that it makes no difference?

255/35 is actually almost the same profile as 225/40, as the second figure is sidewall height as a percentage of tyre width.

Yea its a measure of the height of the side wall of your tyre.
I don’t know if there would be any advantage to having two different size tyres front and back, just make sure you don’t have an un matched pair either front or back as it may cause handling problems!

Also I’m not sure your car will pass the nct if you have two different sizes of tyres on the car (open to correction here), plus insurance companies may make a deal out of it if there was an accident etc.

It's fine if it's supposed to be that way, my last car had different tyre sizes & tread patterns front/rear.

As far as the NCT is concerned the tyres on each axle must be matched in size. You can have bigger (or smaller) tyres on the back without affecting the NCT.

Ok I didn't realise that. Makes sense so.

Bigger wheels never go on the front. Usually on the back.
Can cause problems with speed sensors for abs and trc

Not only do I have different tyres on the front and back, I have different sized wheels front and back. :)

    All depends on the car.

They aren't smaller on the back though!

Edit: read the link, the rears are wider.

Was gonna shock you and say they're smaller at the back. :D

As you say, the bigger wheel will always be at the back, my rears are 1.5" wider. No tyre rotating here!

Normallly, the lower profile tyres should be put on the rear.
