    Hi All

I've currently got some muscle strains in my neck/shoulder, causing pain and restricting my head movement. Today is my company's annual golf outing at Druids Glen and I really don't want to miss it. Would anyone have any advice for managing a similar injury? I've been prescribed difene and muscle relaxants but only started the course last night so they've not really had time to work yet.

If anyone has suffered from similar in the past and has any advice I'd really appreciate it.

    Thanks

It's a bit late for the response for today but I wouldnt have played if i was to be honest hope it went o.k. anyways. I had a similar problem last year and went to a phsyio just once which helped ease the pain, tightness etc. but the best thing i did was buy a proper orthopedic pillow for neck pain etc about 60-80 euro but it was the best buy ever and have not had the problem since . I hope this helps in some way.

can you tell me which pillow you bought for your neck problems, i have tried about 5 different types and none work but i haven't given up hope of finding a suitable one. i have a cheap flat one at present but i need one to support my head when it falls to the side but is still flattish.

Tiger balm works wonders for my many aches and pains! Sounds like you might have a more chronic problem tho!

do you put in on before you play or after you play with the onset the stiffness?

Had a back operation four years ago where I had a disc taken out of my back and was away from golf for close on nine months.

Back went again on Friday night and reckon it is another disc problem as am getting siatic pains down the right leg into the right foot. All golf cancelled at the weekend and probably facing a break for a while until I manage to see a consultant and likely to get a MRI scan done.

Terribly frustrating with the golf season starting.

sorry to hear that... commiserations fella.

have had a rib injury myself for a good while now and after 6 months of no golf & much physio im back out swinging sticks at wknd's. its been a long bloody road tho... and i genuinely feel for those who have a recurrence of any back related injury.

only small plus is you have a bonafide reason for getting an occasional light back massage at the venue of your particular preference :)

I unfortunately have had a few muscle injuries, I had one in the back of my right shoulder from golf that kept coming back.

REST it and let it heal, stretch before you go golfing to warm up the muscle as a cold muscle will not react well to a full on golf swing. Look at all the pros they warm up,stretch before they play and hit the gym to do the same afterwards.

Difene which is a NSAI along with rest can help but is a bit harsh on the stomach and a slow recouperation.

A last resort is a cortisone (steriod injection) SAI into the affected area, this acts locally for about 2 weeks and a big improvement can be noticed within a few days. They are drawbacks, you pretty much have to rest the area for 3-4 days and can only get a limited number of injections as it may affect your bodies natural release anti imflamatory hormone.

Speak to your doctor first and get some professional advice.

As said, do the stretches beforehand. Try running, and see how many muscles you pull. The same with golf.
I'd usually do the first stretch here:

and also the first stretch here:
