Apologies if this is in the wrong section, i'm not sure if my question is suited to Accom&Prop, so if this is the wrong place, Mods, please move it!

My father is on the look out for a parrafin oil heater, preferably new, and price range is not defined, but he wants one that has an output of 2-4 kilowatts to heat a smallish enclosed space. He's finding it difficult to source one here in Ireland, so any help or reccomendations are welcomed!!

Are they not illegal these days?

He's standing over my shoulder right now giggling saying "only if you get caught"(Parents...who'd have em...)

AFAIK they aren't illegal, but i may be corrected on that!

I don't know about the paraffin ones, although I grew up with one in the bedroom. I think you can get diesel-powered ones.

Try searching for them under kerosene heaters. They're not illegal - but not recommended to use indoors - they're generally used as patio heaters.

The Green Party, if they have their way though, will soon have them outlawed. Why? Because they are f*cking idiots. (Apologies to yr Dad for my language!)

    :D
I'm not sure if they are myself or not. I know they've banned things like them old 2 bar fires, maybe that's what i'm thinking of!
Would he not just go for an oil filled rad or something?

Ah he's very relaxed, he doesn't mind a bit of bad language and he's not averse to using it himself:D

They don't seem to be illegal, but they're popularity has certainly dipped. Dad reckons they went out when central heating came in (imagine a house with no central heating!!)

He has an oil filled rad, and a gas heater, but neither of them are any good. he's since informed me its to heat the garage when he's doing a bit of work out there, so he'd need something with a decent output. The oil filled rad is-in his words "not worth a sh!te"
the gas heater is better at heating the space, but its pretty expensive, so parrafin/kerosene would be a more economical choice.

Did you ever find a heater?

I've found a heater but can't find paraffin for sale anywhere except in small 4l containers in hardware shops.

Don't know but will find out. You have to keep a window slightly open when using the heaters anyway to make sure theres enough oxygen, so the air will be changing.

Apologies, haven't really been on boards due to shocking flu!!

He actually went ahead and got one from England(joined Ebay too, I'm so proud of him lol) I can't recall the price offhand but is was significantly less than he would have had to pay here, including any extra charges. He's buying his kerosene/parrafin from MCL in Newbridge at the moment, they're within driving distance and have pretty competetive prices.

Condensation isn't really an issue for him-as stated before, its for the garage, which is huge and there is a fly window that he tends to leave open regardless of the weather. I don't know price wise how its working out for him, but he's thrilled with it!! The heater he bought has some sort of shelf "for warming my tea as well as my ar$e" (his words btw :p)

Looks like MCL is the cheapest around for proper paraffin.
Only problem is that they seem to be the ONLY supplier in the country for 20 litre drums of it.
