Central locking started acting up a while ago and now the key wont turn at all , so i wd40'd the lock and the key is not catching

So basically im opening and locking the car by climbing in the passenger door which is a pain in the arse ..not sure if its just the barrell or the central locking itself .

Can anyone recommend a garage who wont rip me off ?? or have any idea how much im looking at ??

    Thanks

It sounds like its the barrel, the lock comes in around 160 Euro so you should change the barrel first.

It sounds like the lock is working but the barrel isn't catching.

I had a problem with the door lock in my Golf.

I dont have a remote locking but anyway.

The key started spinning around a bit and wasnt catching anything. I had to lock from the boot, handy as I walk past it when I get out anyway. Sound like yours?

I got a kit off eBay. Instructions sent. 15 euro, 25 minutes and fixed.

A very common problem so its cheap as a few bags of chips to fix.

Apart from a VW dealer, you could try OTTO in Tallaght who specialise in German car parts, or you could try any motor factors.

I don't know if locks and barrels can be got outside of a VW dealer but I'd assume they could.

By the way door locks are a common problem on these model Golfs along with window regulators and motors.

If you are grand with DIY then by all means DIY. You wont do a million euros worth of damage and at the very worst you will have to bring the lock and bits to a local mechanic to do if you take it out and have trouble.

    Basic runthrough

    Open door
    Unscrew summet
Pull out the module where you put your key in.
    Take it apart
    Clean
    replace parts
    clean
    put back together
    clean
    put back in

There are some springs in there which make it a bitch of a job but worth while if you get it, and you should do.

    best o luck.

    EDIT:
    And yer welcome.
