Oooh, exciting...possible early beta/prototype?

A couple of days ago I bought this -

    dazebefore.jpg

It seemed like a review copy. Which although is not a prototype, is still pretty cool for one reason - it's a review copy/beta of a really rare game that was only released in Australia. But the review copy comes from the UK. Did someone review this copy and think 'nah, this game isn't for Europe?'. Who knows.

Anyway, that was just an add on to another purchase. What I really wanted from the seller was this -

    Zerotolerance1.jpg

Looks like another review copy, just this time Zero Tolerance, right?

But look at this, there's a Combat Cars sticker under it (which means there's possibly Combat Cars data on this cart) -

    ZeroTolerance2.jpg

It gets even more exciting, the boot up Accolade logo on the official cart does not look like this -

    Zerotolerance3.jpg

And the best one, in game screens -

    zerotolerance4.jpg

Who the hell is Mulligan?! You're not in the full game. Plus the player cards in the full game look a lot more detailed than your cartoony face.

Also note, in the cart I bought the walls are yellow and the ground is back. Look at the below screenshot from the full version. The walls in the map are black and the ground is yellow.

    0.jpg

Anyway, that's all I can tell from the photos..should be interesting when I get the cart!

Cool, I really hope you dump it if it does end up being a one off though!

If Enternow comes along to your beers we could ask him to bring his Megadrive dumping stuff.

Boards beers prototype dumping. Sounds like fun! :D

I'm not sure I'd be comfortable telling my friends what I did that weekend in my house :/

Ah it's grand. I'm sure most of them teabag each other in Halo on a regular basis.

    That's far worse than dumping.

/Edit - awh, checked again and it seems the map in the promo cart is the same as the retail.

Still, the Accolade logo/character design is still totally different. I just checked some romsets and its not in any of them.

Yeah playing Halo, they should be ashamed.

    Digital archaeology. Interesting term :)

I've been in contact with the guy I bought these from (to confirm the original of the Daze before Christmas) and he used to work for a well known Sega magazine in the UK. Said that absolutely loads were thrown out but he managed to save a few (still has some Gameboy and Gamegear stuff left).

I can only imagine some of the things that got binned.

Wouldn't be a prob, but just reading up on it there it seems the flash programmer can't dump Genny games - only SNES. Some posters are saying it works, most are saying it doesnt. I think your only resort is the MD/Joypad link cable method. I remember you ordered it, did it arrive yet?

It did indeed! And I haven't a clue where it is. :D Shouldn't be too hard to find. /fingers crossed. I'll see if I can dig it out.

If I can't find it, make sure to come along to the beers anyway. I want to see these 1337 Street Fighter sk1llz of yours ;)

Plus you've already missed too many as is!

Coke & Hookers on tap I presume?

Oh and whats the SF of choice these days? SSF4 via 360?

Well if you guys are going to the retro night on Saturday I'd be happy to bash some Street Fighter out and show off some of my skillz (if I have any left)

How are your Last Blade skills Retr0? Been playing much since the last time?

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 52,403 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

Haven't played at all. In fact I'm useless at SNK games and haven't played SF in ages so going to be really rusty :( Won't stop me playing if last blade is on the cards!

I went out to my parents today to pick these up. Brought the Nomad along to test them out as I couldn't wait until I got all the way back out home.

Unfortunately Daze before Christmas is region locked to PAL so I can't play it on the Nomad. Interestingly enough though it has that heavy prototype cart weight to it.

Had a brief play of Zero Tolerance and it's looking good so far! It seems very very different. I think the enemies are even different. Definitely worth picking up!

Release the power of that Nomad man - goodness. No excuses to be letting a treasure like the Nomad tell you what you can/can't do :p

I've a feeling that all of o1s1ns mods are keeping enternow with a roof over his head and food on the table. And he's living like a king. Keep pimping those mods to him, he's a mod addict.

Do you mean that in jest?

The only time I've charged o1s1n for a mod is on his MD2, where there's a chance I'll bork the console due to the CPU pin lifting procedure...

As much as I'd love to..it's a Nomad! I was scared enough just taking the screen cover off.

I would imagine so. Retr0 is a big teddy bear so he is :pac:

You only ever charged me for the MD overclock. You did the MD2 for free.

And to be honest, the amount of head wreaking time you put into the MD overclock (including putting another sound chip in on a separate basis) 20euro was not enough!

Now that I think of it -- the reason so few "prototype" carts exist is probably for the same reason you can't find many alpha/beta carts and discs -- they could be unfinished, or simply destroyed to keep trade secrets.

I know from my testing days that we'd have loads of builds with extra levels and stuff that won't ever see the light of day.

Hell, IIRC the AI in F.E.A.R. was actually better in some builds than in the release!

Yep that's pretty much it. The only ones that do turn up were either stolen from labs or sample copies that magazines didn't sent back to the developers like they were meant to.

The Rez prototype that was distributed online a while ago was something similar. The music in it sounds better than the final release.

I put up a thread over on Sega-16 about these carts if anyone is interested. Took a few picture of some of the initial differences I've found.

There you go, I don't even know what I charged for :o It no doubt provided a chicken fried rice/smoked cod that evening regardless :D
