    Is mid SEPT. or OCT. the best time to visit NEW ENGLAND area.What are my options outside of car hire to get around .Are taxi expensive in BOSTON area 20/40 mile journey.

    You can get around the city of Boston easy enough by public transport.

    You can get buses up to Vermont

    Sept/Oct is a very good time to visit, the weather is lovely but it is very busy in Vermont and New England in general with 'foliage watching' so a lot of places are booked out as is car hire.

    You don't want to be using taxis for long journeys like 20 or 40 miles.. I worked in Burlington, MA about 18 miles north of Boston and a taxi in or out to Boston was roughly $60. If you are venturing outside of Boston towards New Hampshire / Vermont then a car is pretty much your best option.
