Hi, I was wanting to find out, if anyone has bought part worn tyres recently. I am doing some research, as to what is charged and for what size in different areas. I am in the part worn tyre game, and was wanting to try a delivery service around the country, but need info to see if it would work!
Please post back if anyone has any details you may think are of interest to me.

I can see this type of business doing well during an economic recession but I'd be concerned about the quality.
Was there some EU regulation about part worns recently?

The last set of tyres I bought were part worn jobbies. If I recall correctly paid 100 euro for four 195/65 R15 tyres fitted...if not 100 it was very close to 100. Tyres were at least 80% when I put them under my car I reckon. I have sold the car since but they were holding up very well up until I sold the car. Make was Nokian, which seemingly are held in very high regard in the continent. If you would like to know any further details on where I got them OP feel free to PM me and I will be happy to assist as best I can.

New tyres have approx 8mm tread depth, and it's advisable to change them at 2mm, so one can measure the value by the depth of tread.

Add in the cost of replacement/fitting, and it's hard to see how they are economically viable for anything more than 25% the price of a new tyre. (And this is without knowing the possible hardship they have been subjected to.)

That part of the argument is a bit nullified though as every second hand car bought has part worn tyres on them that the new owner would not know the hardship they were subjected to by the previous driver.

except the second hand car has (probably) had them since new, and we don't know why part worn tyres were removed from their previous owner/car...

Just because a used car might have them on since new doesn't make them any less risky to drive on than sourcing part worn tyres from somewhere else.

What I have always wondered is where do part worn tyres come from? I am inclined to believe it's from crashed cars but I stand corrected?

I heard that it was some regulation in Germany I believe that you couldnt sell a second hand car in certain districts without replacing the tyres? Hence a glut of second hand tyres. Dunno how true that is though, the person could have been talking without recourse to their mouths.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

I recently bought 4 part worn, 265/65 R17, for €260. Two Dunlops (€150 new each) and two Bridgestone (€200 new each).

Plenty of thread left on them, the guy said they came from Germany. The reason, he said, was that in Germany they have to change the tyres from summer to winter each year.

Thanks for all the recent replies, there has been a lot of conflict of opinion where these tyres are concerned I see.
For those wanting to know, there are several reasons for the quality of a part worn tyre:
1, As mentioned in Germany, they have the season regulation and costs to have tyres stored, so the Germans move them on.
2, The law in Germany states a legal limit of 3mm, where as here and UK legal limit is 1.6mm.
3, I was recently made aware that German law also states that a tyre is to be removed should it get punctured, hence most part worn tyres will have puncture repairs made, by any supplier of the part worns.
All part worns should under go a pressure test, examining for side wall damage, and any other defects. Punctures are repaired, but not side wall damage.
These tyres are no more unsafe that any used tyre on any car, as long as they are correctly checked.
I got into part worns, as I had an Audi A4 on a set of 18" alloys. I put Nankang a budget tyre, paid €120 a piece new, and got about 2000 miles ware out of them, before the inside side wall started to split around the tyre. I went to England on holiday, needing tyres and decided to try part worns. If i recall correctly, I got a mixture of Dunlop and Continental, they had loads of life left in them, and I managed to ware them down to nothing, lets say, if the guards had seen them, my licence would be gone!
I think that using part worns, means that you get the advantage of a cheep price, but the best tyre names on the market, Let's face it, there ain't too many of us, now with the money to pay out for a set of Michelin to go on our motor.
Keep your opinions coming, hope my bit of info was of use and anyone with any doubt, maybe can look in a different way towards part worns and start saving some money!
    Thanks Guys

Second hand cars have nothing whatsoever to do with my point!

I bought two winter tyres for my jeep last week to get it through the NCT, i didn't want to spend a fortune on new tyres, then find out the jeep fails the NCT on something else major. The 16inch tyres i bought were €30 each fitted and balanced.

I went to a business in Lifford co. Donegal, the selection of tyres was unreal, but the best selection was winter tyres, there was 40-50 in my size 215/65-16. I looked at some of the all season and sport tyres, but i wouldn't put any of them on my normal car, most only had 3-4mm of tread. But i'd pick a 4mm tread good brand tyres over brand new cheap tyres any day.

Had to laugh at the sign out side the door "ALL TYRES ARE PRESSURE TESTED etc", all sounded very technical. The pressure test was the fella holding the tyre under water for a few seconds to see if there was any bubbles:D

There is a guy 15 miles from me buying in part worn tyres from Germany, just seen a 40ft lorry deliver some on Friday, thats 1400 tyres,
I wonder what he pays for these tyres in Germany..he charges on average €25- €30 per tyre thats 16", i know the cost to deliver them to Ireland via 40ft lorry is €2850 and any damaged or poor thread tyre received in the load is refunding in next load and you dont need to even return them(not pressure tested it seems)...not bad eh???

I would say he paying €3-€5 but maybe someones in the business on here would give me an idea... he buying them in Frankfurt...
To be honest i was think of getting into the business myself and wanted some advice

As far as I know, these are being bought for sub 5 Euro. The last time I tried to buy these (Was stoney broke 2 years ago, and needed temporary rubber until I could afford a good set) the Shops were selling them for 30 Euro for a 15", but I needed 17"s which came in at 40.

I asked about brands, and there was an inhaling sound at the other end of the phone - before being told I'd have 4 different tyres with 4 different tread patterns on them which isn't a good idea to begin with, and then I was told that some have punctures which have been repaired too.

In the end, 160 for a set of part worn tires just didn't look like good value at all, and instead I bought a set of 2 new tires for the front of my car, and a few weeks later the rears. I think (And it's only my opinion) that these part worn tires are a false economy.

    this guy sells Michelin,Pirelli,brigestone etc
so if you can buy them at €5 and any bad tyres dont need to be returned...(whats to stop guy selling and fitting 10 tyres for €300, then putting these down as damaged tyres and being replaced in next load)
there is a very good profit to be made...
