25k to 30k for a new car

This is on behalf of my brother.

He had a 06 audi a4 2.0tdi which caught fire around 3 weeks ago on Bothar na dTreabh in galway. Its a write off and hes getting paid by the insurance company.

Now he does pretty big milage, wouldn't be far off 600 miles a week maybe more. So it kind of has to be diesel, or should I say he wants a diesel. He imported the audi from the UK and is looking at doing the same for his new car.

He is currently looking at a 330d m sport 08 model but I'm just wondering are there any alternatives you would reccommend. He wants leather, cruise control etc and his last audi had low profile tyres which affected the ride, and he doesn't want the new car to be the same.

Any advice on cars he should test drive would be appreciated.

    Cheers

Forget about the MPack so, even a 330dSE rides very much on the firm side. Great cars, though.

Ya i figured that. Just wondering though are there are any other cars in the price range you'd recommend or is the 330d the cream of the crop

Has your brother thought of Saab or Volvo? Even 5k. buys a lot of car for the money and even the lower models are well loaded. A C-70 could be had well within the 5k. mark :) Great cars that will go well for years and no worries about depreciation because others have already taken the hit :)

    335d or 535d M-Sport gets my vote.
ride is nowhere near as hard as some people make it out to be.

ive just been driving my dads E60 5 series around Dublin today and its M-sport on 19" wheels with Run Flats and it is more smooth and more comfortable than my old 320d SE (E90 Shape).

my advice would be to test drive and see which one suits your brother best.

dont think you would get an 08 one for that money. 235bhp would be enough imo for most people.

While all nice cars in their own right bazz I think a 330d is a step above the cars you listed there. Those are 2L/2.2L and the 330d would be a different animal.

I know if I was spending my own 30k I would not buy an Honda/Opel.. I'd just kick myself on the rare occasion I'd see a 330d and know I could have had one instead :)

Agreed but I was thinking that a max budget of 30k and looking for a 08 or newer would rule out finding a 330d, cheapest and only 08 is a 335d at 34k.

true, but unless Revenue decides to let the buyer away with no VRT, it's completely out of the budget :P

Just home from work. Brother said jag xf and 335d are out of his budget. I think since he has already owned an audi he probably wont go for the a6 even though it looks like there is some value to be had.

Do you think the price of the 335d would come down much between now and january. Would it make sense to buy a banger now and then in 6 months time buy a 335d. Cheapest 08 335d currently being around £22000 on autotrader.

Would it drop to 18000 by January or am I just being an idiot

Edit: Or does the 330d make more sense for price performance comparison.

330d is still a cracking machine and i would be delighted with one, but a 22k stg 335 plus VRT would be heaven for me!

whats the VRt on a08 335d currently?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,352 ✭✭✭plonk

9k for the vrt roughly whereas its about 7 for the 330d. I think we might go and take a test drive of them on saturday if we can find them anywhere.

The problem with the test drive though is he will probably prefer the 335d but can't really afford it
