    Hey Guys,

I’m currently looking into the idea of setting up my own business and am having some serious problems deciding on a name.

To give some background, for the last 5 years I’ve been working in the IT dept of a large retail chain and while there developed an in-store media system consisting of both in-store radio and flash content for their store LCD and Audio systems. The system was built it to be synchronized centrally so the radio is live and centrally streamed, and the screens can be update within about 3 minutes across all 25+ locations.

I know I can majorly undercut the current market leader for this service and provide all the content having doubled jobbed in audio production for the past 3 years, my close friend who is a flash animator has also coming onboard.

Right know, I’m still in the early phase of negotiating hardware prices etc and I’ve already got 2 businesses with several branches already interested.

One thing really getting to me tho, is I cannot choose a name!
Without the name, I can’t register the business name, create a website or even the logo etc

I’ve been playing with things like…

    GreenLightMedia
GreenBoxMedia (the hardware is getting fabricated so I can choose the coulor)
    V2Media
    Sonic Media
    Stream Media
    Beat Media

But they all sound a little, em, corny.
Any ideas guys from past experience of what makes a good name? Any other advice?

    Cheers,
    Paul

Personally I think the most important thing is that it's 1. memorable and 2. relates to your business and 3. it doesn't sound too generic, or like someone elses.

It doesn't have to meet all criteria though. I mean, some of the most established business names (e.g. tesco, yahoo) have nothing to do with the business nature.

I think "stream media" for instance sounds too generic.
It's like a company that we deal with whose name is "business trading co."
It's a terrible name, and when I heard the name first, I thought they were dodgy, and was wary of them - but it turns out they're an excellent supplier for us. How many other potential customers have been turned off by their name though???

They're already taken lad, do a wee google and you'll see.

    GreenLightMedia - I know :(
    GreenBoxMedia - I know :(
    V2Media - Up for sale
    Sonic Media - US Company

I've literally been brain storming for about two weeks now and every time I thought of a name I wrote it down and checked it later with IEDR, CRO and just general Googles, but everytime its gone.

The original name I was going for sounded fun but not professional and didn't sound related to the business, but then theres the other side of the coin where ya have it related to the business but sounds generic. Its trying to find that perfect balance.

When i was originally developing the software behind this, we kept jokingly calling it the 'Magic Box' and so MagicBoxMedia was my original name .
It didn't bother me it was taken in the UK, Irish wise it was free. Some people just convinced me it sounds like a magician, so i'm trying to think of something else that has the same fun sound to it.

Why the fixation with 'media'? As mentioned above, I think a lot of names ending in 'media' tend to sound generic and bland at this stage - maybe time to think outside the box a bit more. It doesn't have to reflect the business exactly - have you thought about playing around with maybe using your own name in some shape or form or just coming up with something fairly random but clever sounding?

You might be reading too much into this. Potential customers will be more interested in your product/service offering and will get over the name fairly quick. Tesco or lidl arent successful because of the name they chose, theyre successful because they are very good at what they do.

Even "google" is a bit odd. "coca cola" is weird too: 4 syllables.

Thinking about the nature of the product you could go with something like centralsound, centralmedia.
I would go for a name people are likely to remember in fact I quite like the Magic Box idea.
