yea....and funnily enough i find that north america is way behind us in mobiles. their phones seem old fashioned to me. we seem to get the latest stuff quicker and our phones are more advanced.

i am scientifically basing that on my braws phone (lives in toronto) always being crap compared to mine. and he says the choices are crap. and when
i look for myself when i have been over there they seem kerap.

buy an ipad. i got a good deal on one over there.

That is assuming that it'll have our GSM bands.

The Nexus One would be a good candidate for a phone to buy over there, if you can find one for sale somewhere that is.

you're pretty much limited to whatever is on offer in T-mobile or AT&T stores. their phones should work over here.

Just remember that you won't be 100% sure whether it works or not until you get home and the sales guys in electronics shops in the major tourist cities in the US are notorious for the extravagant claims they make about their products. I saw a CBS 60 minutes program once which exposed the scams that go on, in one case a salesman in NYC told the reporter that the (ordinary) cell phone he was selling would be able to talk to satellites if she was out of range of GSM coverage. Know your product before you set foot in the shop or go window shopping at least a week before you plan to go home, listen to the sales pitch then go home and research the product & make sure that the specs. include 900 and 1800 GSM for voice calls over here and that the charger can handle 220V 50 Hz.

ye thats what im trying to do right now so far iv found out,

charger is usb so not aproblem

apparently its tri band gsm which means i should be able to use it anywhere

been looking at some reviews and besides a software / firmware problem with the gps it looks like the captivate is getting great reviews

that GPS is a big problem though with their galaxy S's. id do a bit of research on that before paying hard cash for something that could be a nightmare to return.

so far it seems like there is a fix for it and some of the reviews are saying it will be fixed in firmware but ye ill do some more looking into it

Doesn't matter if the charger is USB, surely you'll want to have a wallcharger as well. It may be a USB cable but it will still have a voltage.. make sure it works here.

Can you not get a GSM Desire over there?

if it comes with a wallcharger great ill buy an adapter and transformer if i have to if it jsut comes with a usb cable ill just use that to charge it it dosnt bother me too much either way

I think that's only some small regional carrier. The USA has the Nexus One, Incredible and EVO... no need for another variant :p

I'm in New England too... not looking for an upgrade to my N1 but thinking of picking up a Motorola Charm for funsies. Looks like an interesting device.

Just be careful that it supports European GSM and UMTS bands!
Nothing worse than buying a fancy phone and discovering it won't support 3G at home!
    GSM 900/1800mhz
UMTS 2100mhz and ideally 900mhz too (due to launch in next 12-18mth and will drastically improve indoor 3G reception)
