Micra or Fiesta are both great first cars, cheap to buy, small engine and light on petrol.

Yaris was my first car, peug 206 my 2nd. They're both great little cars for a 1st car. The Yaris is probably easier to drive, the peug is far more nippy.

Spend about €500 max and get a Fiesta.

You will more than likely prang it, and iv seen crashed Micra's you do not want to be in one.

Polo?? 1lt, nippy, cheap to run, tax for the year is €172 euro.

And with regards to your worries of small cars crumpling on impact the only small car I have seen crumple from any from of a bang is a micra.

The amount of them I have seen folded from very little and being passenger in one that crashed years ago is the reason I will never ever drive or get into one ever again!

My mates first car was a fiesta and she loved it, she had it years & still misses it like mad .. it was her baby lol

I've never found the 206 all that nippy .... tho it was a 1.1 I drove for a while every now and again. I just couldn't take to it for the reason it took ages to pick up speed compared to anything else I'd drove! And the handbrake felt like it was in a funny position kinda sat high up. Tho I mainly cursed it cos it was so slow to go (and no there was not a thing wrong with it mechanically)

I have a little Toyota Stralet. Cost me €950. Would definitely recommend one.

I have this car as well! I love it, and the 1.3L engine is very nippy making things like overtaking and motorway driving more enjoyable than if it was a small car. It also is very reliable (as are most Toyotas I have ever come across) and holds its value reasonably well.

    1) double check that insurance in a bigger car is less affordable in reality.

    2) small <city> cars are all fine and well (and very very common) but in this country if you'll be doing mixed driving (as virtually everyone does in this country) the likes of a 1.4 ish corolla, focus, golf, 323 is far more capable and practical.

I would say go with a fiesta, that was my first car, cheap to run and reliable too, i crashed my fiesta with 4 of us in it, took the impact well and no1 was injured, had to get a bonnet, grill and headlight after the crash which i picked up for 50 euro in a scrapyard. They are cheap to tax too and not too bad on insurance. My gf bought 1 recently, its her first car and she paid 950 for insurance which isnt bad for first time insurance. Well ware anyway with what u buy and happy driving :)

in the 206 they just put the accelerator in as a decoration. doesn't actually do anything at all

    Hi Donna,

I think €2000 is a good realistic budget to go with for your first car, if you can get something cheaper, all the better. Look for a 2000 or 2001 for your first car, with low enough mileage.

I would recommend a fiesta or a yaris, as others have said - they were my first and 2nd (current) cars, respectively.

I learned to drive in the Fiesta and it was a great car, cheap to run, reliable and parts are cheap and readily available.

The yaris has a slightly smaller engine (1 litre as compared to I think a 1.3 in a fiesta) but is a "nippy" car, easy to park, very fuel efficient and tax is only €172 for the year. I have had no problems with mine and I have it two years so far. (2003) It does find it hard to get to higher speeds (over 100kmph) but we shouldnt be doing them anyway.

Oh, and bringing a mechanic or friend with you when buying is a MUST! Especially if buying privately. My sisters car has given her nothing but grief since she bought it. Just be careful, alot of people are out there to offload ****e cars on unsuspecting people. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is!

If you are looking for a reliable, fuel efficient car, and arent bothered about having a "fancy" car, I would go with either of these. Stay away from Peugeots, everyone i know with older peugeuts has nothing only problems, and parts are not cheap. Alternately a friend recently bought a Toyota Auris for her first car and loves it. She got a 2000 for €2020 I think.
