I'm planning an extended trip of indefinite duration, up to around 12 months, starting in Asia. So looking for an extended policy... my main concern is that it be as cheap as possible while covering the real disaster situation, medical evacuation, that sort of thing. I'm not so concerned with it covering minor issues like theft/loss of bags or having large excesses there. Any suggestions appreciated.

I've been looking into the same thing mayself the last few days, doing a round the world in a year taking in Asia, Oz, NZ and S.America and have found it to be more expensive then I expected taking into account real disasters like you mentioned and activities that may be carried out such as sky diving & getting cover to do the Ince trail hugely pushes up the premium because of the altitude so if you are considering that don't forget to take it into account, prices are between €750-€1100 of what I've looked at so far.
I've come across www.backpackertravelinsurance.ie which seems to cover most areas but would be interested if you have come across anything else or if anybody else has any recommendations.
