Best Plan For Tethering

Apologies if this has already been covered.

    I have an iphone 3g on pre-pay with O2.

I now need to be able to tether the iphone to my laptop in order to access the internet a couple of times a day and send and receive e-mails, some with attachments.

I know I will have to move off pre-pay.

Can anyone advise as to the plan I should move on to so as to allow to do what I now need to do in the most cost efficient way?

    Thanks.

All the 02 advance plans come with 2gb of data. On advance 350 and higher ya get a free extra, one of the extras available include a further 3gb of data so with that ya could have 5gb to tether with

Three also allow you tether with your 2GB on their plans, and like O2 if you are on one of their higher plans you can add another 2GB. Three are a lot cheaper then O2 (in terms of what you get for what you pay) but have flakier 3G coverage in places. Find some friends in your area who have 3 and see what they think of the company.

I would advise a sensible mix of calls/texts and tethering. All operators have tethering options but if moving to another network means that suddenly all your contacts are on different networks (i.e. eating into your minutes as opposed to free same network calls and texts) then its hardly worth it!

Very good point there. It should be noted that as far as I can see there is no way to get free texts on the Three network without going for the €95 per month plan. However, you do get a fairly huge number on the other plans, and can add an exta 150 texts as your free extra if you want. I also like how they allow you reallocate your minutes to texts as well.

O2, if I remember correctly, only offer free texts to other O2 customers. three offer free calls to other three customers. No idea if Vodafone do anything like that.

Well, 3 offer 333 webtexts which can then be sent from the phone using either JellySMS or EirText. This frees up 166 of your flexi-units which may then be used for calls and SMS when all the webtexts are used up.

I'm not selling O2 here, just giving info:

O2's Advance 150 + 2gb is 40euro a month, includes 150mins + 100texts, free O2 to O2 calls and texts, plus your data can be used for tethering. 60euro gets you 350mins + 150texts with the same 2gb of data.

Any O2 Advance plan on 60euro a month or more gets either: extra 3gb of data / free off peak calls to everyone including landlines / free any network any time texts / free anytime landline calls / Free sky sports and news plus extra 500mb / free O2 lifestyle tv plus 500mb

With 3, they offer ALOT more Add-ons, which you can add onto any price plan, from 40 euro a month up. Details are here.

    40 eur a month gets you 350 flexi-units + 2gb data
    60 eur a month gets you 650 ......
    80 eur a month gets you 1,000 ......
95 eur a month gets you unlimited

If you already have a iPhone, why not avail of new customer or upgrade with O2, then sell this new locked iPhone to someone who wants it on 3Pay or O2pay as you go. You're effectively paying for the subsidy in the 12/18 month contract you're taking out. Or you can jailbreak and unlocked the new iPhone and sell it as unlocked to a meteor person!
