just wondering what peoples thoughts are about drinking and training?

do you think you gas earlier or it affects yor training ability that much?

i guess this is aimed at the lads who have a few beers during the week, 5 or 6 cans not getting hammered lol and go training the next evening

im not talking about high level training just the usual bjj mma classes :D

Well if the drinking is part of a generally already unhealthy lifestyle its never a good thing.

It also depends where you've set your training goals, ie why are you training MMA, Judo, BJJ, Muay Thai etc - if its just to tell the lads your doing a bit, but your not overly pushed on competing (and there's nothing wrong with that) then you'll get away with that lifestyle for awhile.

But you'll find the lads who are serious about competing, or maybe in the style's where they're pushing for the higher grades their focus won't be on the off licence or pub.

Personally I love a gargle, I love the craic with the lads - but once I focus on competition the gargle is more or less knocked on the head, and I certainly feel the difference in training, in my diet (not getting drink induced binge/cravings) and in my recovery.

Sorry for the long winded reply.

Alcohol screws your training ability, if it does'nt then maybe you just dont train hard enough to notice!

If your not that serious about your chosen sport then average training sessions are ok though, but for the competitor that does not cut it.

I think it's no problem for a recreational athlete to have a few drinks during the week. For someone competing then as long as you're in shape and on weight it's not a major issue either. You might have to juggle your rest days to take account of it, but it's not the end of the world.

If people need to lay off the drink for 6 weeks religiously to have their head straight or to feel they've put in hard preparation, then fair enough, I know a few people like that too.

Competing is just a bit of fun for 99% of people - when you're hunting a UFC or Mundial title, then worry about every detail.

All the lads I train & compete with (Judo) are like that, and the 99% who just do it for fun and don't follow a rigorous programme are lads who have more or less retired from top level competition.

I wouldn't dream of competing half hearted, the risk of injury is just too great.

    But thats another topic.

Drinking, sometimes the night before a competition I'll have two can's of Guinness to relax and get a good nights sleep!.

Will we open a can of worms about fighter's smoking now :pac:

definately a big fan of mma and train for myself not to tell the lads i do cage fighting and wear the shorts lol
but i do not do it at a competitive level, the odd sub wrestling comp here and there...

Makikomi, smoking now aparently thats really bad for you :D

Tie weights to the beer glass and alternate your drinking arm, it's win - win ;)

Drunken jujitsu is never a good idea. Myself and my buddy always start debating styles when we're on the booze (he does BJJ and I do German JJ). This is what happened last time... Probably NSFW
