new runner....help!

    hi there, any advice for my prob would be appreciated....
    i have over the last year trained hard and increased my distance from 2miles to 13miles. I think i have carried this out in a correct manner as i have had no injuries, and i built the distance up consistently over time.
    I tend to only complete one long run (10-12miles) once a week, and limit the other 2 or 3 runs to less distance (average 5miles)....and alter these between fartleg, and recovery runs. I think i eat healthy, keep the calories to healthy c.2000 a day, drink about 2-3 litres of water a day, no processed food etc.
    my difficulty is running in the morning...even if i warm up, stretch, and then run, i find i have no energy. i have tried to get up early and have different breakfasts, and of course water...nothing seems to work.

    Maybe i am doing something inherently wrong, if so, can someone point it out!!

    No quick answer I'm afraid. You're doing all the right things. Some of us love morning runs, others don't. One obvious thing is to ensure you have a reasonably good evening meal if you're planning on heading out early the next morning. But keep persevering - Dublin is best run in the mornings!

    as Roy said, you're doing the right things so it's just trial and error to find what works for you.

    I don't eat before a morning run and this works well for me (I'm very sluggish after food). Over time, what I've found is that I need to eat later the night before a long morning run. If I have dinner around 6pm the night before, the morning run is tough. If I have dinner at 9pm (which is usual in our house as we're not home early) I usually have a great morning run. Might this be something worth trying?

    Try a good strong cup of coffee? Allow some toilet time before you go for your run though.

    I too, always feel sluggish running in the morning and don't enjoy it much.
    I have forced myself to get used to it, as sometimes, its the only time I can get out.

    The key for me is drinking plenty of water before I go to bed and in the middle of the night. I have the advantage (HA HA) of a child with an unsettled sleeping pattern to wake me up in the night to remind me to drink a glass of water.

    Also, maybe you just need to accept that your body needs to wake up a little before it likes running and not stress too much about it.

    Thanks guys and gals thats a help....there might be some thing in the later meal the evening before, and a coffee before ....as it is a general feeling of energy lacking!!

    i will persevere and hopefully (because i love the quietness of the mornings, and they tend to be fresh and sunny) i will get used to them!

    really glad i wasnt doing anything glaringly wrong too!
