I was just wondering what the swimming pool is like. I had a brief look at the DCU sports website and it provides very little information other than it's 1.5m depth. Isn't this a little bit baby depth? Any other things I should know about? And is it worth the 250e price?

Swimming Pool in DCU is top class. Its a 25metre pool and plenty of space with two lanes usually kept free for people doing lengths. The depth is grand, most pools wouldn't be much deeper. Also in the pool complex is a steam room, sauna, jacuzzi and a tepadarium(a different type of steam room).

Definitely worth the 250e for the year, You get full use of the gym which is upstairs aswell. Gym is very good. You can also use the squash courts aswell

Do you or anyone else know, Is the pool available to those who attend St Pats Drumcondra as it is part of DCU I think?

Hey, ya all the colleges part of DCU get the same rate as DCU students. My friend in Mater Dei got that rate anyways.

Oh rite sorry, I was sure my friend was getting it for the same price as myself. Anyways for St Pats for the academic year is €286 which is still excellent value

Is it 1.5m from end to end?? That's my major concern because if it is, that's up to my torso/shoulders or so, how is that world class??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,159 ✭✭✭✭phasers

That's less than 5 foot deep! That can't be as deep as it gets

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,895 ✭✭✭✭phantom_lord

fairly sure the deep end is 2m

You realise that you swim horizontally and not standing up, right? :)

Yeah I do, but most pools should be around 1.7m-2.5m. In all the hotels I've been to they are pretty deep. The shallow end is really annoying. In the website it says Our swimming pool is a five lane pool ranging in depth from 1.07m - 1.50m

^^ can someone that has actually been to the pool re-assure me it's fine?

I was a member there for a year after I graduated and had no problems with it at all. If you're swimming normally, the depth doesn't make any difference. If you're competing, a deep pool is necessary for dive starts but they don't allow diving at all so it's a mute point.

yeah, if your 6ft then the deep end will go up to your shoulders and the shallow end will be just above your hip.

Maybe you can explain why you need it deeper:confused:
i cant see any need for it to be deeper unless your thinking of diving in which your not allowed to do anyway
You can also use the squash courts aswell
    not for free though right?

Can you just pay to use the pool without joining the gym?
Id like to use it sometimes but id never get moneys worth out of the gym, I prefer to run outside.

Yeah the swimming pool is the only good thing about the whole gym, I don't fancy the depth too much and I know I b!tch about it a lot but I like diving. And a 1.5m deep end is not "top class"..

Almost no new commercial pools in Ireland allow diving any more - the insurers wouldn't stand for it. Unfortunately DCU was designed as a private pool and not a competitive pool.

The only issue with the swimming pool is it's depth. Then again this isn't an issue for most of us. As already said, you cant dive in anyway so depth shouldn't concern you.

Apart from this the pool and facilities around (sauna, steam room, spa, etc) are really good.
All are very well run and extremely clean.

I didn't hear of a membership that includes only the pool.
However, if you negotiate with the staff you may be able to get a deal. I'd say send Ken Robinson an e-mail about it.

From someone who swam competitively for over 12 years, 1.5m is standard fare for a swimming pool and more than safe for dive in, if you know what you're doing. Rare to find a pool where continuous depth is over 2m. We're talking the NAC in blanch, UL and very few others.

does the gym still have no squat racks? And do dumbells still only go to 34kg?

    Correct on both counts, Walter.

Its an alright pool. The Ben Dunne gyms have much better pools!!

The deep end of the pool is very shallow. Its not even 6 feet deep.

I was a member of DCU gym for 3 years and in my opinion its not a good swimming facility....

just to double confirm, yep the shallow end is 1.07m and deep end is 1.50m, had to check today after all this fuss :p
really out of curiosity why is this a big deal? I see lots of people doing continuous lengths and flipping against the wall and they dont bash their heads etc.
Is it just the diving in?
I thought people would be more concerned with things like how busy is it or is the water quality good etc

Don't get why this is an issue either. Obviously it's not great for diving, if you want to dive, go somewhere else. But IMO for doing lengths and stuff it's more of a help than hindrance; if you're absolutely wrecked after doing however many lengths it's handy to be able to stand against the end wall of the pool and rest instead of having to tread water or cramp your arms holding on to the edge of the pool.

I was a member last year and sadly you can not just pay every time you want to go. I wish that was the case because I did not use the membership half as much as I should have!

As for the quality of the pool, I think it was grand and not a problem for any kind of swimmer.

Also the facilities are keep very clean.

Is the pool open to students for swimming lengths all through the day?

I'd love to go for a swim between lectures if possible..

Read the pricelist guys! Students can pay 5 to swim only on weds and sats from 2-3!
