MacBook Pro wireless(Airport) base station question...

Im thinking of getting a Macbook for college, starting this year hopefully! and have some Qs. BTW I watched all the vids on the Apple site, but but am still unsure and I thought I'd ask here to be 100% sure, plus I also rang the freephone customer service number but was left waiting on the line.

Do I need a base station to connect to the internet in my home or college?

Whats the purpose of the base stations? Why buy one if theyre not needed?

    Thanks in advance

    Hi Swizz,

I've had a MacBook Pro and an Airport Base Station for years. Most recently - about two years ago - I upgraded the base station to a TimeCapsule version.

I cannot recommend TimeCapsule highly enough! Hourly backups, wirelessly and invisibly. You'll never lose information ever again and never have to worry about doing tedious backups.

The Airport base station and TimeCapsule are wireless routers. You do need a router to connect wirelessly to the internet at your home or college (unless you use a dongle and access the internet through one of the mobile phone companies). You can use any 'normal' router (such as Eircom) to do this, but the Apple version (particularly TimeCapsule) is so elegant and seamless and trouble-free that I would not think twice about it. It's worth every penny. Either way, a wireless router will allow you to work from any room in your home or office wirelessly - a must-have for a laptop user, in my opinion.

MacBook + TimeCapsule = a very happy user.

    :-)
