asking current employer for reference??

    Hi all,
Would any of you feel comfortable asking your current employer for a reference for a job you have not technically been offered yet?

My present situation: In perm job (since Nov 09) I really dislike and am on panel for civil service position for the last 18mths or so. Civil service wheels are now in motion with health form and garda vetting form recently sent into publicjobs. Should't be any problems with either of them so the next step according to my letter is for me to provide a reference from my current employers. Now, I am of the opinion that you don't leave a permanent job (even one you dislike!) without a job offer in your hand.
I am also concerned that my current employers wouldn't give me a glowing reference. It probably shows that I'm not that keen on the role as I have made some careless mistakes over the past few months. The current role is nothing to do with the prespective role and completely outside my field.
I have already provided them with two relevant references spanning 8 years so am not really sure how much they would care about this current reference or if they are just ticking boxes.

Anyone have any opinions or experience of this?
    Cheers!

Seems odd to ask for a reference from a current employer. Like the reference is hardly going to be glowing if the employer knows you plan to leave.

Im not sure OP on this one, could you tell the Civil Service that you don't want your current employer to know you're leaving until a job offer is in hand? From the Civil Services perspective they probably just want confirmation that you are actually working where you say you're working and not making it up.

I'm in the same boat, I hate my job and want to move on, but I just know my current employer won't give me a good reference as he wants me to stay put.

The only way around it I can think of is to explain the circumstance to your prospective employer (tell em your current one doesn't want you to leave and you are sceptical about the quality of the ref. as a result).

Then say to the prospective employer that you'll cut a deal. If they want to hire you they should make a conditional offer. Their offer of employemnt would be conditional on you providing a good ref. from your current job. Then resign your current job and ask for a reference. Most employers, provided you worked hard and honestly, will provide a good reference after then know you've leaving. If they only think that you are thinking of leaving then they are incentivised to give a crap one, or worse, none at all.

    Thanks for the replies.
I'm interested if this is usual practice for the civil service though? So annoying as I have already provided two v. good and relevant references!
