Does DCU offer free wifi? I have a wireless modem so if it doesn't then it's no big deal. Trinity does so I just thought that I'd ask.

There's wifi on campus, and it's pretty decent.

Doesn't really reach the on campus accommodation (I just barely had it and was literally in the room right at the closest corner to the source), but it's only like €100 for internet for the year there (and far, far better than you'll get anywhere else).

I assume you have to register your laptop for the network? How/where?

Nope. All you have to do is set it up to work with the proxy and you're good to go.

    Cool thanks!

Finally found info on DCU website about it. Link for anyone interested: http://www.dcu.ie/iss/laplan/index.shtml

    Not really...

It may be faster than most connections, but the proxy wall removes the ability to do a lot of things.

30meg UPC would most likely be better...

I know P2P connections don't work but can you torrent with the campus accommodation (Larkfield) network?

I guessed there would be limitations on the campus wifi...as in no p2p or torrents or poker etc?

At some point last year they seemed to remove that requirement, I was able to use torrents for most of last year, and didn't require the proxy to be setup to use the internet (or any other network applications).

I can't say it'll be the same this year, but they seem to have pretty much removed the blocks for accommodation at some point (still couldn't do any torrenting or whatever in the computer labs or on the wi-fi)
