I just transfered all my music collection from laptop to computer via usb hard drive, and then imported to itunes. I made a copy of the music to my computer(obv)...then deleted the music from usb hard drive.

However, when I go to play the new imported songs in itunes I see they've got a (!) mark to the left, and when I click to play them i get the following:

"the song xxxxxxx could not be used because the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it?"

Now please don't tell me that I have to go and locate each and every one of the songs??? I've done it with 3 individually and it would take me weeks to do over 3000 songs! :(

Is there another way to sort this mess out?

It sounds to me like you have just told iTunes that the songs were on your ext hard drive. ie just changed your iTunes folder. iTunes will import the names and track info but will then go looking for the song in your ext hard dive. You say you deleted them, that's why you get ! Because they aren't there anymore or if they were you may have disconnected ext hard drive.
Check which folder is your iTunes library within preferences.
If you still have the tracks on ext hard drive then I'd do the following.
Change iTunes music folder back to default within preferences
Make sure that "copy music to iTunes music folder" is checked
Then use the add to library function in the file menu. Then browse your ext hard drive.

I have a jailbroken 3gs and i just bought pwntunes.
Google it. It replaces the need to use iyunes at all and you get a new folder when you connect to a pc that allows you to drag and drop. Album art and all track info goes too. Its much easier but you must be jailbroken and it costs €9.99
Its a little steep but well worth it. Theres a free 30 day trial too.

Find your files on our computer and MOVE them the the folder called Atomatically add to iTunes. This way you will have just one copy of your library on your computer and iTunes will sort them out.

For future rebuilds just copy the iTunes folder from 'My music' to your external drive as a backup then copy it back down to the same folder afterwards and your lirbary will be back to where it was.

Ok I got this sorted guys thanks.

So should I just move/copy all my music that I want to put onto itunes into the folder called "Automatically add to itunes"?? And any new music i get, I should add it to this folder as well?

Yup, iTunes watches this folder and will take care of any music, apps or books that you put there.

Ok, so basically I put anything I want to sync with ituens into this folder? For apps btw....when I download them from itunes(waiting to receive iphone still) do I put them into the same "automatically add to itunes" folder?

Apps from the App Store are automatically downloaded to this folder and then sorted by iTunes into the Mobile Applications Folder.

Look into the folders and you'll see what's there. If you allow iTunes to manage your library then everything is located here. It makes backups and restores pretty easy. Just take the whole folder and copy it if you have the storage space.
