Stolen car.. Insurance claim advice needed

    Hi everyone,

only wondering would anyone be able to advice on insurance claim.
My car was stolen couple of days ago. I have reported it to guards and insurance co. Guards will get in touch in case the car turn up. The insurance co is sending me loads of papework...
The insurance co said they will proceed with the claim if the car is not found within 10 days. They said they would get the car valued.. I wonder how would they be able to do that when the car is gone and also how much money will I get from the insurance co. if the car does not turn up. My insurance was fully comp. I thought they should pay out at least as much money so I would be able to buy same year, make and model as the car which was stolen but someone told me it mite not be the case.
Can anyone advise on this please????
    Thanks a mill.

They will assess your car as to the year, mileage and market value etc. It is up to you to distinguish it in any way by means of extras that you may have fitted. They will look at the current market for vehicles of similar description and make an offer accordingly. After that, it is up to you to argue your corner (if you have to, you might be pleasantly surprised)

they will deduct any excess from the value don't forget...

The insurance co said there will be no excess in this case when car was stolen. The excess on the policy was only €300 or €600 anyway..

Thanks for that oldyouth. I guess they will only be looking for the info like milage and extras when the 10 days is up. They never asked me about those things so far.. You say they will look at the current market.. do you know where they are going to be looking? I mean do the insurance co do the search on carzone or similar or elsewhere... heard they mite go by the market value which shows on the VRT calculator but that would be desaster as the value on this thingy is comming up lots less then what you could buy the car for on the market..

if you have receipts for work done to the car like a full service history or maintenance bills for timing belt ,clutch or anything else . work you wouldnt need to do again for some time show them all to the insurance company . if you spent money doing modifications to the car the insurance company could cancel your insurance if they did not know about the modifications ...sorry to hear about your car getting nicked best of luck with it

I got two new tires this time last year abt €300 but nothing since so I doubt I would find the receipt for them.. Also..it was a Jap import so service was done by a Jap guy who has a garage here not by Honda itself :( Honda would not service Jap imported cars for some mad reason!
And yes.. it hurts as she was my baby.. Got is streight from Jap.. done it all by myself so miss her a lot!!!

maybe put the details of the car on a new thread and a picture and people here will be able to keep an eye out for it and if possible reunite you with it , sometimes the are left parked in a car park until they need them for more crimminal activities , it may be worth a go

Did they break into your house to get the keys?

Definately put it up here - I'm sure the mods might sticky it or something? In terms of insurance, they will always give you too low a figure. It is up to you to counter this. I did it with mine by searching for similar examples (i.e. price I wanted) and emailing the links to insurance rep I was dealing with. He met me half-way which was something, but I've yet to hear of someone getting the full value for their car back in any scenario with an insurance company! Just make sure you try get the examples to match your spec as much as possible - they'll use any excuse to knock money off.

Where abouts are you Elle? Someone tried to take my Integra Type R the night before last; they scarpered when the alarm went off. An identical one was burnt out after an apparent theft attempt not too far from me a few nights previous. Im assuming that there are a pack of scumbags targetting Hondas at the moment...

I was of the impression that they have to give you what it would take to replace the car, no? If the list price falls below the actual selling price then thats not a lot of good to anyone.

Nope... thank God! I have a 4 months old baby.. I would have died if they did..
I still have both sets of keys.. they musted cut the roof and get in that way... no broken glass on the floor or anything..
Think they had to push it out of the drive way and up the road too as the starting of the engine under my window would have woken me up!
Also not sure how they started it as you need a key and push the button in the same time... just cant believe it.
They obviously knew what they were doing!:(

    Hi guys,

just to keep you updated my car did not turn up so far:mad: and I dont really expect it to turn up..
Got some paper work from the insurance co in post today.. they seams to make massive issue from the fact that the car was not parked in the drive way as they have it highlighted everywhere where they mention this fact.. the road I live on is cul de sac..so you can park your car there as you pleased as there is only 10 houses on that road..all my neighbours do it also..does anyone knows why the fact that the car was not parked in the drive way (on the top of my door) should make a difference??? We have other car parked in the drive way that night...

You sure you didn't park the car in the driveway.... Not trying to tell you to say that on the form or anything...

There's a question when you're taking out insurance as to where your car is usually parked.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,419 ✭✭✭tommy21

The insurance company are asking this because you were technically supposed to park car in driveaway (as in if you had said street parking your premium would have been higher). Not sure what it means for your claim though. Surely it can't invalidate it, you could have just as easily been at a friend's house up the country and parked it there and had it stolen.

I know.. think i said it was usually parked on private property which it was so cant see why this should make any differenc to the claim.. sure it could have been parked in town and stolen there...

I think that declaration means that it is parked in the declared place 4 nights a week (in other words to stop you saying its parked in a locked garage when in fact it spends 7 nights a week parked on the street). They might make an issue of it but I dont think it will effect the claim, not unless somehow they can prove you have lied in the declaration, which by the sounds of it you havent, and also I cant imagine they can prove anyway.

Ah it was nearly every night parked in the drive way.. there mite be the odd night when there would be our other car parked there so my S2000 would be autside.. its only a difference of 2 meters anyway...
Just bad luck i guess.. :(

I wouldn't worry about it Elle as long as the car was normally parked in the driveway there is nothing they can do. The question on most sits is where is your car "normally" parked so it doesn't need to be parked in drive every night.

If your still worried read over your policy docs and see if there is anything in there

BTW sorry to hear about the car being taken.

Insurance pays out on book value, not Carzone value.

Hard luck in not getting it back anyway OP, it was a gorgeous car, but just hop straight into another one now :D :P

With a hard top ;) :pac:

Go and have a look at a few of the S2000's that are on sale for €8500 or below. If you're happy with any of them then accept the insurance company's offer.
Hope it all works out Ok for you.
