I was in the canaries there a few weeks back and I was in a mercedes taxi which had over 777,000kms (almost 500,000 miles) clocked up on it. It was still running perfectly without even a rattle to be heard from it. Unbelievable!

I was in a 2002 VW transporter van another time in Ireland and the driver had 350,000 miles up on it. The van is falling apart though.

My mother put 220,000 on an astra!
My aunt said she had a vw derby with 270,000.

A friend of mine had a mk5 transit which was nearly on its 4th time round the clock....

Though by today its sitting in a field rusting like many other transits of that age

A LOT depends on the climate, I bet that car would be falling apart in Ireland, but since Spain is dry and has a good climate, it'll probably drive to 3rd time around, maybe more.

EDIT: What I'd like to know is, how the car was/is serviced, what is done special to it? does it have anything done to it other than an oil change? If you take a very good care of the car it'll drive a long time.

A 1990 Mercedes taxi in Limerick had 250k on the clock...and it was on it's second time round.

Yeah the roads in the canaries are absolutely perfect too.

My fathers 00 Nissan had over 250k miles on it before he traded it in recently. Drove it into the ground.

My parents had an 87 Chevy Nova (aka Toyota Corolla) with over 400,000 miles on it. It was still running fine when they got rid of it... it was just falling apart (too much salt on the roads where they live)

My diesel teacher in FAS said he worked on a transit with 3/4 of a million miles and said the engine was never opened for any reason!
Goes to show lads and girls change your oil every now and again, its for half nothing and you will see the results if you plan on keeping your baby for a long time..

I've seen several stories of VW beetles hitting the million miles mark.

My dads 99 octavia hit around the 400,000 mile mark.
Engine was still running perfectly, rest of the car was in a jock.

Most probably just 6 digits on it instead of 7.

Yes but how do you know its turned over x times if it goes back to zero. I suppose the only way is manual tracking

Most Ive ever seen was 640000 miles on a Honda Civic. Pretty much confirmed to me that those engines are bulletproof!

I had a 1991 Merc 300TE, automatic, bought it with 240,000 km on it, it was written off with 891,000 km, same engine, same gearbox, car was in perfect condition too.

The oul fella had a 77 or 78 Datsun 120Y with 240,000 miles on it, new owner seemingly got over 300,000 on it.

I've had a couple of W123's and W115's in Germany with 500k + Kms on them, and seen the same used as "Grand Taxis" in Morocco and Algeria with 1,000,000 + kms on them. Pug 504's and 505's regularly hit 600k km as well.

As Plug said above, regular oil changes are the secret.

Ditto. Last time I was in Tenerife, I was in a W124 Mercedes E-class 250d with just under one million kilometers on it. The world record is some taxi driver in Greece with 5 million kilometers on his W123 Mercedes. I think he went through 3 engines in that car though...

AFAIK Mercedes swapped the Greek taxi driver a new C220 CDI for his car so they could put it in their museum.
Not a bad deal i'd say

it was a bad deal for the taxi driver, unless he sold the new onw to finance buying another w123, far too many problems with the 00s onwards mercs.

200,000 miles is not really all that high, my own daily driving car is at 196,000 and still going perfect, i've another car with 220,000 and still fine, i'm not worried about them, two others around 180,000 and myself and my father sold a van last year that had 360,000 approximately (mercedes 609d). Even took a look at the mother's landcruiser the other day and it's gone over 200,000.

plenty ok mk2 golf vans and jettas especiallu with well over 200,000.

Highest i've ever personally seen on cars is 400-odd on a finnish guy's volvo 740 diesel and a mercedes 300D with close to 550.

Highest mileage car i've owned is an opel rekord which had 145,000 when a nissan diesel engine was fitted to it and the nissan speedo (and odometer) was used, mounted up on the dash, with just over 315,000 showing on it by the time i sold it for it's engine.

Seen plenty of 500,000 plus pickups, vans and trucks in the US, and seen just over a million on a very old scania bus in norway when doing a bit of travelling, but mileage like that isnt too unusual for old commercials
