    Hi folks

Unfortunately, laptop got infected with the most annoying virus ever! Pop up after pop up

Anyhow, tried many websites for downloads, tried them but nothing worked.

Computer froze, at one stage thing wouldnt even shut down.

In the end, I did a system restore and no more pop ups..

Question is, Is this virus completely removed from my computer??

    Thanks

    C

Probably, but you can't be sure. A system restore just restores your settings (not your files) to an earlier point. If you were infected at the point you restored to (maybe the virus hadn't become active) then the virus is still there.

If you don't use your PC for anything personal it doesn't really matter. If all you want to do is surf WITHOUT EMAIL, then have at it. Just treat your PC like you would one in an internet cafe - working, but probably infected.

If you use your PC for anything personal (Facebook, Online Banking, Email, anything that uses a password, basically) I would consider a proper wipe and rebuild. Once infected, you can never be 100% sure that you're malware free without a full wipe and rebuild.

If you want to do a wipe and rebuild, back up your photos and documents - only things you KNOW aren't infected, and then DBAN your hard-drive and reinstall the OS. It's a pain in the ass, but it's not as bad as having someone empty your bank account ;@)

I fixed the very same "Security Tool" virus for a customer today.

Reboot in "safemode with network support" (press F8 straight after the BIOS screen) and download/install http://www.techspot.com/downloads/4716-malwarebytes-anti-malware.html run a quick scan and remove the stuff it finds.

Reboot and the pop-ups should be gone.

Download and install Microsoft Security Essentials. Make sure the PC is up to date.

I had problems with the last thing in that some ejit had enabled a manual proxy config using proxycfg.exe. For over an hour I couldn't figure out why no updates were working at all and remembered that old chesnut from years ago.

If you're stuck at any stage let me know.
