me and a good few friends are thinking of starting a airsoft team and thought of a name but at the time we never realised that the initials were IRA (irish republican airsoft ) but now we realised it i want to know if we did call it this would it be suitable or too offensive/historical for airsoft

I would stay away from that to be honest Kevin, I'm sure there is loads of other names you could come up with... that name would be very offensive to loads of people.

Seems to be acceptable in the airsoft world to
pretend to dress up as a bad guy's from any other country except your own! :D

    ... <snip> ...

you could potentially get people with load outs dressed similar to Nazis or Al-Qaeda or viet cong etc

There are still proscribed republican groups active on this island; so anything similar is both skirting a very fine line between stupidity, bad taste, and drawing *extremely* unwelcome attention from both the media and intelligence services, both foreign & domestic.

And before anybody thinks I'm being melodramatic about that last bit; ever thought about the name of the team you sign up using when travelling to events abroad? Hmmm ... might want to consider that. You have no idea who is reading what; and the Gardai at large most certainly read this forum.

Also, whilst comparison with Al Quaeda might be reasonablly accurate, the nazis & VC don't exist any more; nor have done for a very long time so you can't really draw parallels unless you are trying to make political statements in which case yuo aren't playing airsoft.

TBH, I find it extremely disengenious for anybody from Ireland to be pleading ignorance to using the word "republican" and/or magically coming up with the acronym I.R.A. for an airsoft team name kevin.

had a post posted, but deleted it.
As realised OP had no mention of Load outs! just a team name! rendering my post invalid.

I don't think it was invalid Bullets; it's a similar argument to have about uniforms and the like, as much as I don't think it's quite in the same level of seriousness (unless of course you're trying to make political statements in doing so ... )

Fair play to you bringing the matter to peoples attention and no going ahead with that name. I personally would not be offended but, the guys are right it will cause some unwanted attention.

Good luck with the team and hope you get a good name soon.

It's cool that you're aware of it. But as Lemming said, the word Irish and Republican are synonymous with that TLA (three letter acronym). Remember the name your team choose is not only representing you, but it's also representing Airsoft itself. Think about what you're trying to present, and then ask yourself if that name stands up to it.

Names describe what falls under its category - you will be labelled by what you call yourself. For example, if there were a team called the Plumbers, you'd expect them to be plumbers by trade etc. Just be aware of what you're calling yourself

I'd say that's a significantly different problem you've got there.
